Job Description

Numerical simulation is crucial in designing and developing new products. However, accurately predicting a product design's performance and reliability can be challenging. This is especially true for multi-scale problems, which require complex mathematical models that are computationally demanding in terms of runtime and memory. Generally, surrogate modeling methods have proven successful in accelerating computational models. However, traditional approaches often fail in multi-scale problems within industrial settings.

In this PhD thesis, we aim to explore efficient ways to speed up multi-scale problems using surrogate modeling on a specific Bosch case study. We are particularly interested in integrating simulation data with measurements to enhance the predictive quality. Naturally, this problem setup poses many challenges, including:

  • Modeling multi-scales with suitable surrogate models
  • Integrating data and simulation with uncertainty during the training phase of the surrogate models to add a sense of reliability
  • Handling large parameter spaces
  • Approximating strong non-linear functional behavior

Qualifications

  • Education: Outstanding university degree in applied mathematics
  • Experience and Knowledge: In-depth knowledge in numerical simulation of ordinary and partial differential equations; good understanding of machine learning methods (supervised and unsupervised learning), surrogate modeling, or model order reduction; strong programming skills, ideally in Python; solid understanding of probability theory/statistical methods
  • Enthusiasm: Interest in resolving industrial applications
  • Languages: Fluency in English
