Overview

Join Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) as a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on cutting-edge neutron scattering instrument concepts and designs for HFIR and SNS. You will support scientists and engineers with performance simulations and be part of the Neutron Instrument Development Group in the Neutron Instrument Technologies Section, Neutron Technologies Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate.

Your independent research will involve preparing scientific manuscripts and presenting your findings at conferences and to sponsors. This role offers the opportunity to expand your expertise, gain experience, and engage with a diverse group of neutron instrument scientists at ORNL.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop models and simulations of neutron instruments.
  • Automate routine workflows and analysis tools.
  • Integrate neutron component/device models into open-source tools like McStas and McVine.
  • Apply AI and ML methodologies to neutron instrument simulations and models.
  • Align with ORNL’s core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service, and foster a respectful workplace promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in physics, engineering, or a related field completed within the past 5 years.
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python, C/C++, Matlab, TensorFlow, Scikit-learn, or PyTorch.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with AI and machine learning.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in creative teams.

Special Requirements:

PhD must have been received within the last five years, and all degree requirements should be completed before starting the appointment. The position is initially for 24 months, with potential extensions based on performance and funding.
