Microsoft is excited to announce an exceptional opportunity for highly skilled and passionate Research Scientists to join the Responsible & Open AI Research (ROAR) team within Azure Cognitive Services in Redmond, WA. As a Principal Research Scientist, you will play an instrumental role in advancing Responsible AI methodologies to ensure the safe release of GenAI models such as GPT-4o, DALL-E, Sora, and beyond. You will also contribute to enhancing the Azure AI Content Safety Service's capabilities.

Responsibilities
As a Principal Research Scientist, you will:
- Conduct cutting-edge, deployment-driven research to develop Responsible AI definitions, methodologies, algorithms, and models for both measurement and mitigation of textual and multimodal AI risks.
- Stay updated with the latest advancements in the field and contribute to the scientific community through publications at top venues.
- Enable the safe release of multimodal models from OpenAI in Azure OpenAI Service, and enhance the Azure AI Content Safety Service with new detection/mitigation technologies for text and multimodal content.
- Develop innovative approaches to address AI safety challenges for diverse customer scenarios.
- Review business and product requirements and incorporate state-of-the-art research to formulate plans that meet business goals.
- Identify gaps and determine the tools, technologies, and methods needed to ensure quality and scientific rigor.
- Provide mentorship and coaching to less experienced and mid-level team members.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Doctorate in a relevant field AND 3+ years of related research experience OR equivalent experience.
- Proficient in algorithmic problem-solving and software development (Python/Java/C++).
- Proficiency with open-source tools like PyTorch.
- Experience with statistical analysis and data visualization tools.
- 1+ publication(s) in top-tier conferences or journals (e.g., ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, AAAI, KDD, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, etc.).
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including the Microsoft Cloud Background Check.
Preferred Qualifications:
- At least eight years of research/applied science experience in NLP/LLM, Computer Vision, Multimodal understanding, Deep Learning, Machine Learning, or a similar field.
- Industry experience with large-scale data processing, distributed computing, or cloud platforms.
- Experience collaborating with diverse technical and cultural teams.
- Experience leading deployment efforts across varied technical expertise.
- Demonstrated interest and/or experience in Responsible AI and fairness considerations.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
Compensation and Benefits
The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. Specific locations such as the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area have a different range: USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
