Job Introduction
Reporting to the Automation Manager, the Project Engineer is responsible for the oversight of engineering projects from concept to execution. The role includes contributing innovative ideas for automation equipment and processes, cost reduction, and quality improvement, while ensuring compliance with Health and Safety Programs and legislative requirements.
Major Responsibilities
- Develop innovative automation solutions from initial concept to full development.
- Conduct research programs applying mechanical, thermodynamic, hydraulic, heat transfer, and material principles.
- Create new product requirement documentation based on inputs from customers, management, and regulation.
- Complete automation feasibility reviews and robotic simulations.
- Program and test robot path-planning, optimizing as needed.
- Analyze automation market segments, including competitive benchmarking and technical literature review.
- Assist in the development of business cases for technical solutions.
- Manage part proposal drawing process, ensuring all details such as tolerancing, GD&T specifications, dimensional stacks, and surface finishes are accounted for.
- Design and execute R&D projects.
- Design 3D CAD models and detailed engineering drawings.
- Follow all health and safety protocols to ensure a safe working environment.
Knowledge and Education
- Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Proficient in Python or C++.
- Strong knowledge of industrial robot safety standards and the PHSR process.
- Familiarity with ANSI, SAE, QS-9000, and other relevant industry/customer standards.
- Expertise in GD&T, Design for Manufacturing, Failure Mode Effect Analysis (DFMEA/PFMEA), Dimensional Stack Analysis.
- Understanding of Manufacturing Process & Assembly methods.
- Knowledge of techniques for producing prototype components.
- Ability to work effectively within a project team, often under time constraints.
Work Experience
- Minimum of five years of industrial experience in automation and robotics.
- Preferred project management experience in innovation and R&D.
- Experience with robot programming (especially ABB and/or Fanuc), including path/trajectory planning with force feedback.
Skills and Competencies
- Proficient in 3D CAD solid modeling (CATIA, UG, or SOLIDWORKS).
- Ability to run robotic simulation models using Robot Studio and RoboDK.
- Professional technical report writing skills.
- Strong command of English; proficiency in German is advantageous.
- Proficient in CAE, especially FEA and Simulation.
- Ability to create a DOE and test plan for product or process validation.
- Competent in completing tolerance stacks for complex components, assemblies, and systems.
- Computer literate with capabilities in MATLAB, Simulink, or other relevant software
