Verisk Insurance Solutions is a prime source of information about property/casualty insurance risk. For a wide range of commercial and personal lines of insurance, Verisk offers statistical, actuarial, underwriting, and claims insight and analytics; Compliance and fraud identification tools; Policy language; Information about specific locations; and technical services. The Analytical Data Operations (ADO) team is in charge of managing our data, the very lifeblood of our position in the US P&C Insurance industry. We ensure that our product teams have the data they require, when they need it, and with trust in our systems and processes to ensure they have their finger on the pulse of the industry. We are a mixed team of data analysts, data engineers, business intelligence developers, and actuarial engineers responsible for designing and implementing the country’s largest database of P&C policy and claims information, from data ingestion, data integration, data transformation, data analysis, to business intelligence development.
The ADO team seeks to employ a Data Engineer(Insurance/Actuary), ideally having a good blend of an analytical/innovative mindset, technical aptitude, business acumen, communication skills, and a passion for data and technology. For internal applicants, this position is open to grade level 14.
This is a hybrid role that will combine insurance knowledge, data analysis and communication skills and will be expected to manage projects in multiple work-streams and a variety of internal customers. We are seeking a candidate who can assist in developing modern data applications including database architecture, data pipelines, and data analysis.
As a Data Engineer(Insurance/Actuary), you will...
Build and maintain robust data engineering process to improvise and implement self-serve data
Support product deployment on a new and innovative technological platform with product requirements, actuarial computations, methods, and validation
Design, build and launch highly efficient & reliable data pipelines to move data (both large and small amounts) in/out of our Snowflake Data Lake
Assist with product development and implementation including modeling and assumption development
Execute data engineering projects ranging from small to large either individually or as part of a project team
Perform other duties on R&D, data governance, system infrastructure, and other cross- team functions, as necessary
Adopt an agile framework to schedule work, adjust as needed and continuously improve performance
Convey performance with relevant internal stakeholders
Collaborate with data analysts to develop reports and visualizations
Assist in scoping and designing analytical data assets
Identify opportunities to create, automate and scale consistent analyses or build self-service tools for business users

Bachelor's degree in a STEM major or with STEM coursework learned in associated majors (Actuarial Science, Computer Science, Data Engineering, Data Science, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, Economics)
Proficient in SQL, Database Architectures, Data Pipelines, and at least one scripting/analytics language (Python preferred)
Experience with a business intelligence tool (other than excel) and understanding of data visualization theory
Experience with Git and the pull request workflow
2+ years of experience in the property & casualty insurance industry in an actuarial, data analysis, or data engineering role
Homeowners and Dwelling experience preferred
Excellent communication skills (both oral and written) are required, with a desire to improve presentation and persuasion skills
A self-starter with a commitment to innovation and pro-active problem solving
