Ignitia AB has developed a highly accurate weather model to assist small-scale farmers in West Africa in managing their daily activities, predicting water availability, and improving their yields to optimize food production.
In collaboration with major telecom companies, Ignitia, a high-technology company and social enterprise, has recently developed the world's first highly accurate tropical weather forecast model. We benefit small-scale farmers in West Africa by sending a daily forecast via SMS, provided in partnership with major telecommunication firms.
We were established in 2010 as a team of new researchers in physics and meteorology, assembled from various renowned universities and research institutions, like NASA. We took on the challenging task of accurately predicting weather in the tropics.
For the first time, rural small-scale farmers in West Africa were the initial clients of a significant technology innovation. We appreciate this… and we're just getting started!
WHY IGNITIA?
The current food system contributes about a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions and is ill-equipped to meet the growing global food demand in a socially and environmentally sustainable manner. However, small-holder farmers, who produce most of the world's food, are often among the poorest and most susceptible to climate change effects. We aim to change this scenario. Ignitia has developed the world's first and most accurate tropical weather forecasting model for the benefit of small-scale farmers and agribusinesses. Our hyper-local, highly accurate climate and weather information services enable farmers to make improved decisions that directly impact yield and productivity. We are a high-tech social enterprise utilizing advanced technologies to provide a unique and valuable service for farmers, agribusinesses, and organizations in emerging markets to stabilize operations, mitigate risks, build resilience, and maximize profits.
How will you make an impact?
Ignitia, an entrepreneur-led business, offers critical decision support in West Africa and South America. Our science-based innovation, developed over several years and gaining market traction, is designed for the agriculture sector. We've developed a weather forecasting model for the Tropics that is twice as accurate as existing models, enabling us to provide hourly, daily, monthly, and seasonal forecasts to farmers via SMS and web applications on their mobile phones. Using our forecasts, small-scale farmers can double their yields and income, reducing food insecurity and poverty among the poorest populations in the world.
To date, we've reached over 2.7 million users and are on track to reach more than 3 million by the end of this year! Due to our pioneering position and proven track record, we're now offering the right individuals the opportunity to grow internationally with our company.
