Job Description

Verisk EES is a leading catastrophe modeler providing risk assessment tools to the insurance and reinsurance industries. Our models simulate occurrences of natural calamities across nations and even continents, spanning thousands of years under the current climate conditions. This is crucial for accounting for simultaneous individual damages and estimating the aggregate economic losses and their distributions for arbitrary collections of individual properties (portfolios) which often number in the millions.

This position is responsible for developing, enhancing, and managing the vulnerability component and the overall performance of Verisk Extreme Event Solutions' water peril catastrophe models covering all regions globally. The candidate will work closely with structural engineers, hydrologists/hydraulic engineers, statisticians, and experts in the financial application of probabilistic risk assessment. The candidate is expected to be highly motivated, detailed, well-organized, possess a good set of programming skills, and be an independent worker who is also a collaborative team player.   1. Data acquisition, visualization, and analysis to understand building inventory and its vulnerability subject to flood (coastal and precipitation induced) hazards in any region of interest worldwide
  2. Development/calibration/validation of vulnerability functions and financial loss curves for structures and non-structural components exposed to hazards such as storm surge, rainfall-induced flooding in the regions of interest
  3. Implement building vulnerability research into Verisk Extreme Event Solutions' portfolio risk assessment models and validate the output
  4. Examine property damage following flooding, including statistical analysis of historical damage and insurance claim data
  5. Provide technical support regarding model development and communicate results to clients
  6. Technical writing for internal and external publications

Qualifications

Education Qualification:

A Master’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or related fields

Total Experience: 0-2 years

Must-Have skills:

  1. A robust background in construction practices as they relate to flood vulnerability, and on the impact of water damage on structures
  2. Excellent proficiency in C/C++, SQL, Python, R, MATLAB
  3. Experience in probabilistic and stochastic risk assessment and modeling, especially in the field of engineering
  4. Knowledge of structural design
  5. Excellent communication skills to convey findings to both internal and external stakeholders
  6. Experience working with GIS applications, preferably ARCGIS
