About the Research Internship

This position is part of the EPIC (Extended Perception, Interaction & Cognition) research group at Microsoft Research’s Redmond Lab. As a key contributor to the Transcendence project, you’ll create innovative interactive experiences that integrate artificial and human intelligence. This involves leveraging generative AI techniques alongside interaction design to reimagine the future of documents and applications.

Key Skills and Areas of Interest

  • Generative AI: LLMs, stable diffusion, vision models (LLAVA, GPT4V), ControlNet, and relevant technologies for interactive applications.
  • HCI System Building: Experience in developing HCI systems, techniques, and toolkits, particularly those that utilize generative AI and software prototyping with JavaScript, Node.js, React.
  • Interaction Design: Expertise in creating multimodal interactions (touch, pen, speech), context sensing, and adaptive UIs.
  • Experience Design: Skills in storyboarding, envisioning video techniques, wizard of oz simulations, and animations.

Internship Responsibilities

As a Research Intern, you will apply theory to practice, learning and collaborating with top researchers. During the 12-week internship, you’ll work with mentors, present findings, and engage in community activities. Internships are available year-round, typically starting in summer.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Currently accepted or enrolled in a PhD program in Computer Science or related STEM field.

Other Requirements

  • Research Interns must be onsite at their manager’s Microsoft location for the internship duration.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 1 year of original research in Human-Computer Interaction or a related field, with publicly documented research contributions (papers, pre-prints, videos, etc.).

Compensation and Benefits
