The Workflow and Ecosystem Services group at ORNL seeks a Research Scientist to join our innovative team. You'll research workflow solutions for integrating advanced data science techniques—including simulation, machine learning/artificial intelligence, and statistical data analysis—across the edge-to-cloud-to-HPC continuum at leadership-class scale. This role is part of the Advanced Technologies Section within the National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) Division at ORNL. The NCCS boasts a legacy in High Performance Computing (HPC), operating leadership-class systems, including the world's first exascale system (Frontier) and the largest parallel file system.

Our Organization

This position is part of ORNL’s Advanced Technologies Section within the NCCS Division. We provide scientific, technical, operational, and thought leadership by developing, hardening, and deploying solutions for compute and data-intensive environments. The NCCS accelerates scientific discovery and engineering advances across a broad range of fields. NCCS hosts the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility and has deployed the U.S.'s first exascale system.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

• Conduct R&D to improve workflow solutions for DOE facilities using advanced data science techniques across the edge-to-cloud-to-HPC continuum.
• Develop new research directions relevant to the OLCF mission and the group’s overall health.
• Collaborate with external scientists to advance the group’s, lab’s, and DOE’s scientific missions.
• Author peer-reviewed papers and technical reports and represent ORNL at public technical forums.
• Mentor undergraduate and graduate students in automated workflow management, HPC, edge, and cloud computing.
• Engage with teams across ORNL.

Basic Qualifications

• Ph.D. in computer science or a related discipline.
• Established track record in research areas relevant to the group’s expertise.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior postdoctoral research experience.
• Experience with machine orchestration methods (automated workflows) and HPC.
• Proven experience with scientific and AI workflows on HPC systems.
• Experience leading R&D projects.
• Experience leading research proposals for government funding.
• Ability to learn new technologies.
• Resourcefulness, troubleshooting aptitude, and attention to detail.
• Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
• Strong personal motivation and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
