Job Profile:

Corning is seeking a dynamic “Research Scientist – Fluid and Thermal” to leverage engineering knowledge and foundational understanding to address problems using modeling and simulation. We seek a technically proficient, innovative thinker who can operate independently and effectively collaborate with project teams to deliver cost-effective solutions for Corning’s products and processes. The ideal candidate will employ numerical methods to comprehend physical phenomena, explore design possibilities, and develop novel concepts for various Corning businesses. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential for working with globally distributed project leaders, experimentalists, modelers, researchers, engineers in our commercial organizations, and customers.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities:

  • Develop, validate, and apply analytical and numerical models to address manufacturing processes and product performance issues.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to solve research and development challenges and deliver practical solutions to key business programs in research, technology, and engineering.
  • Create models using appropriate methods and software, expanding capabilities as required.
  • Regularly communicate and present project updates to global stakeholders, requiring availability for evening/late evening meetings (India time).
  • Document findings in internal and external publications.
  • Stay informed of technological advancements.

Required Skills:

  • Deep understanding of fluid dynamics, heat and mass transfer, transport phenomena, numerical and computational techniques, reacting flows.
  • Proficiency with commercial/open-source software such as FLUENT, Polyflow, Ansys-Thermal, OpenFOAM, COMSOL, SpaceClaim, ANSYS Meshing platform, MATLAB, and Tecplot.
  • Exceptional analytical, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to interact effectively with team members and customers.
  • Ability to deconstruct real-world problems into attainable modeling objectives.
  • Flexible and adaptable to multiple technology areas with a good balance of technical depth and breadth.
  • Self-motivated with an interest in long-term technical growth.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with experimental work, either directly or in collaboration.
  • Flexibility to operate in a dynamic work environment and across diverse technologies.
  • Proficiency in multiple software and/or programming languages (C/C++, Unix, Shell, Python, Excel-VBA) is an added advantage.
  • Exposure to polymer processing, viscoelastic flow, or combustion modeling is beneficial.

  • Collaborative nature with the ability to engage openly with colleagues to meet project objectives.
  • Aptitude for translating complex technical concepts to a broader audience.

Education and Experience:

Masters/Dual Degree/PhD in Mechanical (Thermal & Fluids), Chemical, or Aerospace Engineering from IITs/IISc or reputable foreign universities. Fresher or relevant work experience of 1-3 years post Masters/Dual Degree or over 1 year post PhD.

Travel:

Occasional travel to global locations may be required to interact with people in research, development, engineering, and the manufacturing community.
