About the Azure Data Engineering Team

The products within our diverse portfolio include groundbreaking technologies like Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL DB, Azure Cosmos DB, and many others designed to power a new era of data-first applications and cultivate a robust data culture.

In particular, our big data analytics team focuses on delivering products that empower data engineers and scientists to extract intelligence from all data types, whether structured, semi-structured, or unstructured. Currently, we are evolving our offerings into Azure Synapse Analytics to provide streamlined and impactful experiences.

The Role: Senior Applied Scientist / Research SDE

We are actively seeking a Senior Applied Scientist for the Gray Systems Lab (GSL), our applied research division within the Azure Data CTO office. At GSL, you will tackle significant challenges in analytics, cloud, AI, and storage systems. Our projects involve building reliable, scalable, and high-performance distributed systems for data analytics on Azure. With contributions to top academic conferences and numerous open-source projects, our work directly impacts Microsoft's revenue and technological advancements.

Key Responsibilities

As a Senior Scientist, you will:

  • Establish collaborative relationships across Microsoft to leverage technology and create significant business impact.
  • Initiate technology transfers, participate in standards organizations, and contribute to internal tools and services.
  • Bridge the gap between long-term research and immediate product needs, ensuring innovative technologies are pragmatically applied.
  • Develop strategies incorporating state-of-the-art research to address business and product challenges.

Preferred Qualifications

Prospective candidates should possess:

  • A Bachelor's, Master’s, or Doctorate in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Extensive experience in programming languages such as C#, Java, Python, C++, or Rust.
  • A proven track record of publishing impactful academic research.
  • Capability to navigate complex service architectures and drive substantial technology initiatives.
