About the Position

Microsoft is hiring a Senior Scientist to join the Sustainability Science and Innovation (SSI) team. This team is part of the Corporate External and Legal Affairs (CELA) Environmental Sustainability (ES) team, which drives science-based, measurable, and scalable sustainability investments across the company.

The Senior Scientist will ensure our sustainability efforts are informed by cutting-edge science, co-designing solutions for both Microsoft and global sustainability challenges. They will play a key role in advancing the Microsoft Playbook on AI and Sustainability. Ideal candidates will possess significant experience across science, technology, and policy, as well as expertise in data science and Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence (ML/AI).

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive progress on Microsoft’s AI & Sustainability Playbook, identifying and implementing AI opportunities to advance sustainability.
  • Guide cross-company initiatives at the intersection of AI and sustainability.
  • Represent Microsoft's sustainability expertise with customers, partners, and external stakeholders.
  • Develop internal and external publications on sustainability science and technologies to communicate Microsoft's efforts.
  • Review, distill, and communicate relevant scientific literature to inform operational, business, and policy teams.
  • Embody Microsoft’s culture and values in all engagements.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree AND 3+ years of experience in sustainability at the intersection of science and technology, OR 5+ years of equivalent experience.
  • Experience in the private sector, government, or NGOs, focusing on sustainability, data science, and ML/AI.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in environmental science or related field AND 10+ years of experience, OR PhD with 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Flexibility to quickly understand new sustainability domains.
  • Experience managing projects in complex organizations.
  • Success in collaborating across multiple teams and levels.
  • Experience with corporate sustainability reporting and disclosure processes (e.g., TCFD, TNFD, CSRD).
  • Data science expertise, including managing structured and unstructured data, statistical analysis, and reporting.

Compensation and Benefits

The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $101,200 - $194,800 per year. In specific locations like the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, the range is USD $130,000 - $213,200 per year. Additional benefits and compensation details can be found .
