The Role:

We are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join our team and lead the development of our core platform. This platform offers impactful tools and services for developers and businesses committed to mitigating climate change. You will be responsible for building and maintaining systems that empower our platforms and their AI and remote sensing insights. Your work will enable our customers to identify and support top-tier nature-based projects, fostering significant environmental impact.

You'll collaborate with sustainability experts, forest scientists, machine learning specialists, designers, and engineers to understand stakeholder needs and deliver outstanding products. The solutions you develop will engage a diverse audience, from environmentally responsible corporations and individuals to the forest projects themselves.

We value engineers who take pride in their work and strive to make a difference. We seek those who ask insightful questions, navigate ambiguity, and strive for excellence. If you are detail-oriented, methodical, and prioritize simplicity and speed, we want to hear from you.

Location:

This role is fully remote, but preference is given to candidates within 3 hours of Pacific Time due to our cross-functional communication needs.

What You Will Help Us With:

  • Impact: Empower our teams and customers to derive insights needed to identify and compare high-quality nature-based projects from our extensive datasets using our innovative geospatial and remote sensing technologies.
  • Technical Leadership & Innovation: Lead cross-functional projects and integrate product value across teams. Develop and implement strategies and visions for our products and systems.
  • Best Practices Advocacy & Mentorship: Mentor teammates to elevate standards within the engineering teams, driving efficiency improvements.
  • Hands-On Contributions: Develop the systems and tools that enable all engineering and science teams to generate high-quality insights for forest carbon projects, optimizing our infrastructure for efficiency with large datasets.
Experience & Skills We’re Looking For:
  • Strong software engineering background with expertise in Python, Postgres / PostGIS, and GraphQL. Knowledge of front-end frameworks such as React / TypeScript is a plus.
  • Experience building scalable APIs and other system architectures using GCP, Heroku, or similar cloud infrastructure and containerization tools like Kubernetes.
  • Proven experience in leading large cross-team engineering efforts with a focus on collaboration, transparency, excellent documentation, and pragmatic code.
  • Even if not a full-stack engineer, experience with frameworks like React/TypeScript and an obsession with usability and user experience.
  • Comfortable with fast-paced execution and rapid iteration in a startup environment.
  • A passion for environmental sustainability and a desire to make a meaningful impact.
Preferred (but Not Required) Qualifications:
  • Experience with distributed compute systems, including deployment, scaling, support, or maintenance of infrastructure. Our tech stack includes Dask and Flyte deployed through Kubernetes and GCP.
  • Experience managing data pipelines and infrastructure for ML and scientific applications.
  • Proficiency in data engineering, including ingest, storage, orchestration, and compute at scale, particularly in domains like forest science and remote sensing.
  • Familiarity with carbon markets.

You’ll Have The Opportunity To:

  • Approach problems with curiosity and humility.
  • Own solutions end-to-end.
  • Contribute to strategic thinking. <
