Course Number and Title: EEB462H1F – Phylogenetic Inference: Methods and Applications

Course Description: This course introduces the fundamental concepts and methods of phylogenetic reconstruction, including parsimony, likelihood, and Bayesian techniques. Learn about advanced topics like divergence time estimation, species-tree inference, and species delimitation. The course comprises lectures, discussions, and computer labs to give students a comprehensive understanding of phylogenetics.

Estimated Enrolment: 20 students

Estimated TA Support: 70 hours

Class Schedule: Lectures: Tuesdays 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM; Labs: Thursdays 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Sessional Dates of Appointment: September 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024

Compensation

Salary (0.25FCE):

  • $4,728.95 for Sessional Lecturer I ($4,965.40 for SLI Long Term)
  • $5,060.88 for Sessional Lecturer II ($5,163.31 for SLII Long Term)
  • $5,181.38 for Sessional Lecturer III ($5,285.01 for SLIII Long Term), inclusive of vacation pay

Note: If the rates in the collective agreement differ from those listed here, the rates in the collective agreement will apply.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in Biology
  • Strong background in phylogenetic tree concepts, ecology, and/or evolutionary biology
  • Demonstrated evidence of excellence in teaching at the university level

Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience teaching this course or a similar university-level course.

Job Responsibilities

  • Prepare and deliver 50% of lectures and laboratories (the remaining 50% is taught by a faculty member)
  • Co-prepare syllabus and supervise teaching assistants
  • Prepare lab materials for teaching assistants
  • Conduct office hours
  • Prepare, supervise, and grade tests, assignments, and examinations as per University regulations
