Role Overview: Backend Engineer

We are seeking Backend Engineers to build features, design and implement API methods, and improve the performance and reliability of our rapidly scaling systems. Our tech stack includes PHP/Hack, Java, MySQL, and Linux, along with other common web languages such as Python or Ruby. We value simplicity and reliability in our systems, and you'll be collaborating with a diverse team to make Slack a better product.

Key Responsibilities

  • Brainstorm with Product Managers, Designers, Backend, and Frontend Engineers to conceptualize and build new features.
  • Contribute heavily to team projects impacting business significantly.
  • Own team features or systems and ensure their long-term health, enhancing surrounding systems' health.
  • Assist support and operations teams in resolving production issues.
  • Mentor engineers and thoroughly review code.
  • Elevate engineering standards, tooling, and processes.

Qualifications

  • Fluent in German and English
  • 4+ years of professional experience in building backend software systems
  • Proficiency in programming languages like PHP, Python, Ruby, Go, C, or Java
  • Experience with ML and/or generative AI backends
  • Proficient in collaborating with data teams
  • Strong software development best practices, like automated testing and observability
  • Experience with telemetry, logging, and monitoring systems like CloudWatch, Grafana, and Prometheus
  • Ability to contribute to technical architecture discussions and drive team decisions
  • Strong communication skills, capable of explaining complex concepts to various stakeholders
  • Solid computer science fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, programming languages, distributed systems, and information retrieval
  • A related technical degree
