About the Role
This exciting position is part of our Space Systems Development (SSD) business unit. SSD is dedicated to developing next-generation concepts and systems that will sustainably advance our presence in space. As a member of a diverse and skilled team of engineers and technicians, you will contribute to the design of flight software for future space systems operating in orbital and deep space environments.
Within a passionate and accomplished team, you will help develop fault-tolerant flight software that commands and controls advanced autonomous space systems, contributing to state-of-the-art space station services, including the Blue Origin Orbital Reef and NASA's Commercial Destination Free Flyer (CDFF) program. Your work will include defining architectures and requirements, collaborating with subsystem stakeholders, and participating in development and verification processes. This role will directly impact the history of space exploration, furthering the cause of safe spaceflight.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop vehicle autonomous system management and fault management flight software.
- Support the design and development of flight software functional architecture for orbital space systems.
- Develop embedded computer vision software for autonomous proximity operations and docking.
- Create and evaluate requirements for safety-critical, real-time operating systems.
- Participate in trade studies for infrastructure, system, and application embedded flight software architectures.
- Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to define software concepts, operations, and requirements.
- Author unit tests, documentation, and participate in design and code reviews.
- Integrate flight software components, create and run tests, and validate on cross-platform testbed environments.
- Implement intelligent system flight software engineering best practices and processes.
- Present flight software designs at design and milestone reviews.
- Deliver flight software for milestone prototype demonstrations.
- Support the product manager in identifying risks, maintaining schedules, and managing resources and budget.
Minimum Qualifications
- B.S. degree in computer science, computer engineering, robotics engineering, or related field.
- 8+ years of industry experience in real-time embedded software development.
- Proficiency in real-time embedded systems, particularly in C/C++.
- Experience with real-time operating systems and cross-platform development.
- Strong understanding of software, computational science, and intelligent system principles.
- Hands-on experience with autonomous operations in changing environments.
- Advanced competencies in software control systems and application engineering.
- Experience in developing intelligent systems and computer vision software for real-time embedded systems.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Must be a U.S. citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident.
Preferred Qualifications
- M.S. degree in a related engineering field.
- 10+ years of real-time embedded flight software design experience.
- Experience in autonomous system software development for aerospace and related industries.
- Knowledge of iterative development processes like agile or spiral models.
- Experience with prepackaged libraries such as OpenCV, TensorFlow, and others.
- Familiarity with safety and mission-critical development standards like DO-178 or NPR 7150.2.
- Experience in cross-functional collaboration.

Compensation ranges based on location:
- CO applicants: $157,054 - $219,875
- WA applicants: $170,805 - $239,127
- CA applicants: $170,805 - $239,127
