The Role: Staff Applied Scientist, Routing

The Routing team at Cruise navigates Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) to their destinations quickly and safely in urban settings. Our routing algorithms identify optimal routes, prioritizing safety, time, and user experience. The team collaborates closely with Prediction and Planning partners to ensure safe navigation around various agents such as cars, pedestrians, and animals, using high-fidelity maps and real-time information.

Key Responsibilities

As a Staff Applied Scientist in Routing, you will:

  • Design, develop, optimize, and deploy real-time routing algorithms ensuring efficient and safe urban navigation.
  • Lead strategy for ambitious multi-quarter projects advancing routing and autonomous vehicle technology.
  • Utilize high-fidelity maps and real-time data to enhance navigation accuracy and reliability.
  • Develop simulation and measurement tools to test and validate routing algorithms under various conditions.
  • Analyze performance metrics to identify opportunities for algorithm improvements.
  • Enable team efficiency through well-designed and extensible code.

Required Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with:

  • PhD/Ms in routing, graph theory, multi-agent optimization, robotics, or related field OR 5+ years of industry experience in solving complex routing problems.
  • Proven track record of driving projects from conception to completion.
  • Expertise in deploying routing algorithms in real-world environments.
  • Strong understanding of the operational impact of technology trade-offs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective cross-functional collaboration.
  • Proficiency in C++ and/or Python.
  • Passion for self-driving car technology and its global impact.

Bonus Points

  • Experience with autonomous driving technologies.
  • Familiarity with machine learning techniques (e.g., Graph Neural Networks) and their applications in routing.
  • Experience in high-performance and real-time algorithm development.

Salary and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $183,600 - $270,000, depending on location, knowledge, skills, and experience. Additional compensation includes bonuses, long-term incentives, and comprehensive benefits.
