About the Role

As a Staff Research Scientist, you will spearhead AI-driven autonomous discovery, contributing significantly to projects that address critical global challenges such as climate change, water pollution, and pandemics. This includes working on AI computational methods, automation, and robotics to enhance our high-throughput experimental capabilities. Our projects range from developing inorganic compounds to enhancing small molecule pharmacology.

With a staggering $200M Canadian First Research Excellence Grant, the Acceleration Consortium is setting up seven advanced SDLs plus an AI and Automation lab to foster an interdisciplinary approach in material science and chemistry.

Desired Expertise

  • AI and computational skills, including experience with adaptive AI-driven experimental design and first principles calculations
  • Automation and robotics skills, particularly in lab automation and high-throughput experimentation

You'll join a diverse and dynamic team at our downtown Toronto campus, working alongside prominent figures such as Professors Anatole von Lilienfeld and Alán Aspuru-Guzik, to develop and manage scalable SDLs and implement comprehensive research programs.

Key Responsibilities

As Staff Research Scientist, your primary duties will involve:

  • Advancing the design and capabilities of our SDLs
  • Developing and executing research programs that utilize SDL platforms for massive-scale materials discovery
  • Collaborating with faculty, industry partners, and other stakeholders to refine experimental operations and ensure research goals are met
  • Facilitating research dissemination through publications and presentations in high-profile academic and professional circles

Position Requirements

Education: Ph.D. in Computer Science, Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Life Sciences, or a related discipline

  • 1-5 years post-PhD experience in a research-intensive role, ideally interfacing with industry
  • Proven track record of AI and automation in a research setting
  • Strong competencies in delivering research outputs and tools for peer-reviewed dissemination

Salary and Appointment Details

Appointment Type: Grant - Term (2 years with potential for renewal)

Salary Range: $51,543 - $96,643 per annum; compensation commensurate with experience and qualifications

Employee Group: Research Associate

Schedule: Full-Time
