About the Role

We are in search of a creative backend engineer to enhance our CoCounsel team. You'll be instrumental in building applications that interact with cutting-edge Large Language Models (LLMs), providing time-saving solutions for attorneys nationwide. CoCounsel excels at delivering rapid legal research memos, document summaries, and contract red-lining—achieving in minutes what traditionally takes days or weeks. And we are far from done.

As a Software Engineer, Legal Prompter, you'll develop Python code and write engaging prose prompts to LLMs, enabling CoCounsel's continued success. This position suits individuals adept at crafting reliable backend code, paired with the ability to author creative, clear, and effective prose instructions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Orchestrate LLM-driven experiences to delight our customers.
  • Develop Python code interacting with state-of-the-art LLMs.
  • Write, test, and refine prose prompts for LLMs, leveraging your legal domain expertise to ensure accuracy and context-appropriateness.
  • Develop Python code interfacing with APIs, SQL databases, and other data sources & services.
  • Collaborate with legal professionals and other teams to gather and understand requirements.
  • Integrate language models into multi-step systems, evaluating their performance and implementing necessary modifications.

About You

Our ideal candidate is a software engineer who excels in Python, works well with APIs, and possesses domain knowledge of the legal field (JD, legal industry experience, etc.). Key attributes include:

  • Legal domain expertise (e.g., legal practice experience, JD-holder, paralegal, or similar legal industry experience).
  • 1-2 years of production-level experience in software engineering, preferably with a startup.
  • Proficiency in Python or extensive experience with another programming language.
  • Experience with APIs and SQL is advantageous.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Creative and clear writing skills.
  • Experience using large language models (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic, Cohere, Llama, Mistral) preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Base compensation for roles varies by location, ranging from $87,500 to $178,800, with eligibility for an Annual Bonus based on performance. Compensation considers individual knowledge, skills, and experience while ensuring internal equity.
