Job Description

To back this challenge, the Flowers R&D team is currently seeking a Breeding and Data Scientist Assistant Intern in Gilroy, CA. As a Breeding and Data Scientist Assistant Intern, you will assist the R&D team in collecting data (from the greenhouse, lab, field, etc.) and subsequently analyze and report the findings.

Projected Duration: May 2024 – August 2024

Qualifications

  • Work with R&D team members to conduct trials on various subjects such as:
  • Screening of new cultivars in propagation and production – Y-trials
  • Screening for disease resistance
  • Manage and monitor daily activities of R&D trialing (e.g., trial setup, data gathering, and the like)
  • Take responsibility for all facets of data collection, photography, drone data, trial documentation
  • Arrange photographs and data for easy comprehension by others
  • Aid the breeding team in the predictive breeding transition
  • Compile reports on trial projects including data analysis
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues regarding the status of trials, projects, and work activities

What you must have:

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Enrollment in a Bachelor’s degree program in Data Science or a related field of study
  • Knowledge of data collection, data management across numerous locations
  • Detail-oriented and precise record-keeping abilities
  • Capacity to work independently without needing direct supervision
  • Strong skills in statistical programming (SAS, R, JMP, etc.)

  • Proactive and constructive written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work within cross-functional teams
  • Experience working in a greenhouse or biological laboratory
  • Research experience
  • Robust computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Smartsheet)
  • Discretion with confidential information
  • Ability to handle 2 or more projects concurrently

Additional Information

Hourly Salary Range $18.00 - $30.00
