About the Role
We are seeking a Director to join our Healthcare Analytics team within the Biopharmaceuticals R&D Data Science & Advanced Analytics group. At AstraZeneca, our focus is on developing and applying innovative, data-driven solutions to the most challenging problems in R&D. Our team, comprising data scientists, Real World Evidence experts, and bioinformaticians, collaborates closely with leading clinicians and scientists to address critical questions in healthcare. Our work directly impacts patients’ lives by accelerating access to new medicines for those most in need.
Responsibilities
- Lead the development of novel analytical methods that support disease understanding, assess treatment pathways, and optimize drug development using Real World Data.
- Identify and assess opportunities where Real World Data can significantly impact drug development and engage with Therapy Area colleagues.
- Mentor junior team members and initiate internal and external scientific collaborations.
Project Examples
- Use Real World Data to optimize clinical development programs.
- Research and develop machine learning models on multi-modal data to identify biomarkers and further our understanding of diseases.
- Evaluate unmet medical needs in patient populations and compare diagnostic and treatment pathways.
- Create novel methods to understand disease progression, risk factors, and predict outcomes of interest.
- Assess the generalizability of clinical trials and contextualize results in real-world patient populations.
Qualifications
Essential
- BSc or MSc in a Life Science, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
- Extensive experience in designing and conducting observational studies using epidemiological methods with demonstrated impact on decision-making.
- In-depth knowledge of Real World Data assets, such as claims, EHRs, and registries.
- Disease/therapy area and/or biological sciences domain knowledge.
- Demonstrated experience in method development and application using Python, R, and database languages (e.g., SQL).
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively to achieve objectives.
Desirable
- PhD in a Life Science or Computer Science preferred.
- Expertise with clinical data standards, medical terminologies, and controlled vocabularies used in healthcare data and ontologies.
- Experience with Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in generating hypotheses from patient-level Real World Data.
- Experience working in a global organization with complex/geographical contexts.
- Strong track record of delivering and managing multi-disciplinary analytics projects.
- Multiple published papers and/or patents, and contributions to external open-source projects.
