SUMMARY:
We are expanding our team of driven, entrepreneurial Data Scientists who are passionate about expanding financial inclusion by unlocking insights from unconventional data. Be part of the team that develops and enhances Oportun's critical intellectual property used in rating risk for underbanked consumers who lack a traditional credit bureau score. You will be at the forefront of handling extensive and diverse alternative data sets (inclusive of transactional, mobile, utility, and other financial services data) and apply machine learning and statistical modeling to construct scores and strategies for managing risk, collection/loss mitigation, uptake rates, and fraud. You will also drive growth and optimize marketing expenditure across channels by using alternative data to predict which consumers would likely be interested in Oportun's affordable credit-building loan product.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop data products and machine learning models for Risk and Fraud, and provide a seamless customer experience for various Oportun products and services.
- Create accurate and automated monitoring tools to closely observe model and rule performance.
- Develop a model deployment platform to decrease the time it takes to implement new models.
- Construct end-to-end reusable pipelines from data acquisition to model output delivery.
- Lead initiatives to drive business value from start to finish, including project planning, communication, and stakeholder management.
- Facilitate Model Governance Activities like Model Validations and Monitoring through discussions with Compliance, Bank Partners, and Model Risk Management teams.
- Lead, coach, and partner with the DS and non-DS team to deliver results.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Persistent problem solver and innovative thinker with a proven track record of driving business results in a timely manner.
- Masters or PhD in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Economics, or other quantitative disciplines (Bachelor’s degree with significant relevant experience will also be considered).
- Hands-on experience using machine learning techniques such as Gradient Boosting, Logistic Regression, and Neural Network to solve real-world problems.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience with data extraction, cleaning, analysis, and building reusable data pipelines; proficient in SQL, Spark SQL, and/or Hive.
- 5+ years of experience in leveraging modern machine learning toolset and programming languages such as Python.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong stakeholder management and project management skills.
- Able to thrive in a high-growth, fast-paced, agile environment.
- Experience with AWS EMR, Sage-maker, or other cloud-based platforms is a plus.
- Experience with HDFS, Hive, Shell script, and other big data tools is a plus.
"The US base salary range for this full-time position is $127,500 - $204,000.
