Join Amazon's Project Kuiper as an Applied Scientist

Amazon's Project Kuiper aims to revolutionize global broadband access through a constellation of 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). Our mission is to provide fast, affordable broadband to unserved and underserved communities worldwide, helping to bridge the digital divide. Project Kuiper's goal is to deliver reliable and high-speed broadband to consumers, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations in areas with limited connectivity.

Your Role: Applied Scientist

As an Applied Scientist on our team, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining the algorithms and software services that power one of the world's largest satellite constellations. Your work will involve:

  • Developing mission-critical algorithms and applications to derive and deliver reliable satellite orbit information
  • Designing and analyzing software systems for automated Kuiper constellation management
  • Using mathematical modeling, optimization algorithms, astrodynamics, state estimation, space systems, and software engineering to solve complex problems
  • Developing features for systems that interface with internal and external teams
  • Predicting and planning communication opportunities
  • Managing satellite orbit determination and prediction systems
  • Creating analysis and infrastructure to monitor and support system performance

This role will interface with various subsystems within Project Kuiper and Amazon, as well as external organizations, enabling engineers to manage the satellite constellation safely and efficiently.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational skills, be detail-oriented, and able to work independently while managing multiple tasks. Proven knowledge of mathematical modeling and optimization, along with strong software engineering skills, is essential. The candidate should also be able to understand customer requirements, use data-driven approaches to identify potential solutions, select the best approach, and deliver high-quality applications.

Export Control Requirement

Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

About the Team

The Constellation Management & Space Safety team is responsible for maintaining the software services that provide situational awareness of the Kuiper satellites. We work with internal and external organizations to maintain the operational state of the constellation. Our automated systems use satellite telemetry and data to:

  • Predict future orbits
  • Plan maneuvers to avoid high-risk approaches with other space objects
  • Keep satellites in desired locations
  • Exchange data with external organizations
  • Predict and establish communication channels for Kuiper satellites

Locations

We are open to hiring candidates to work out of Redmond, WA, USA.

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD, or Master's degree with 2+ years of experience in science, technology, engineering, or related field
  • 2+ years of programming experience in Java, C++, Python, or related language
  • Experience in algorithms and data structures, parsing, numerical optimization, data mining, parallel and distributed computing, or high-performance computing

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with astrodynamics and satellite guidance, navigation, and control
  • Knowledge of mathematical optimization fields such as convex optimization, integer programming, or dynamic programming
  • Familiarity with state estimation techniques like Kalman Filtering or Least-Squares Estimation
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Experience with cloud services and cloud-native software development
  • History of delivering and operating software in a production environment
  • Experience developing for and working with satellite or space systems
