Job Description

Role Purpose

We monitor key events and conduct research to produce thought-provoking reports, data models, and presentations. From asset valuation to corporate reports, from market supply-demand research to price forecasting, and from regional to global, our analyses help shape our clients’ commercial strategies. Our analysts are instrumental in Wood Mackenzie’s purpose to transform the way we power our planet.

We also support bespoke consulting projects, diving deeper into our data to answer unique questions. We aid our Sales team in retaining and winning new business by spending time with clients and addressing their important inquiries. We collaborate closely with colleagues in our Data and Product functions to maintain the quality of our published data and to deliver content via our growing Lens platform.

By conducting primary research, responding to client queries, and presenting to industry stakeholders, you will build relationships and a network of contacts at key operators, national bodies, and other relevant institutions. Overtime, you will gain specialist knowledge and develop the skills needed to advance your career at Wood Mackenzie.

The Research Associate will play a part in Wood Mackenzie’s Material Applications research team. The focus of the role will be to develop our market-level demand modeling capabilities to analyze global downstream polymer and chemicals markets. This involves researching and analyzing historical polymer demand into applications, running forecasting models, and presenting trends to the team.

This role presents the opportunity to develop forecasting techniques and gain industry knowledge through interactions with other members of the global Oils and Chemicals team. A key objective will be to support the development of appropriate modeling solutions to help our clients navigate the energy transition. Together, you will support the creation of data solutions to generate a detailed commodity-level perspective of the future of applications demand.

Key Responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the update of the Materials Applications platform to generate long-term application level demand for polymers.
  • Helping in the development and expansion of the data architecture and data workflows to automate the ingestion of our proprietary and third-party data sources. Work closely with our data team and regional analysts to develop new end-use market analyses to increase revenue across the chemicals space.
  • Creating data pipelines to push forecast data to the cloud-based lens platform and support regional analysts to access demand data via the supply-demand balances.

Qualifications

You have a keen interest in commodity market dynamics, and you aspire to develop a thorough understanding of how these markets support the natural resources industry and impact our daily lives.

You possess an analytical mindset and an eye for detail, demonstrated in your academic and/or work experience so far. You are comfortable handling and interpreting data and expressing your findings in a clear and insightful way. You are curious and strive to clarify and enhance your knowledge by posing thoughtful questions. You also have a knack for writing and communicating, and have the confidence to present to an audience.

You are a highly adaptable team player and embrace rapid-paced environments with frequent changes. You are excited to be part of a team that offers opportunities to work cross-functionally on various tasks. You can work independently as well as part of a global and regional team, creating ideas you want to share. Your work style is productive and driven, striving to be top in class.

You have an excellent command of English, in both written and spoken forms. Knowledge of at least one other language would be an advantage. You also have a good functional knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.

You must have Python or equivalent coding skills and demonstrate the ability to automate data flows.

You must have experience in data-related roles, showing customer focus and knowledge of vital concepts around ingestion, cleansing, and data quality.

You must have strong skills in Relational Database systems, with the ability to query and analyze data using SQL or other techniques.

Knowledge of any data visualization tool like PowerBI, Tableau or Spotfire is an advantage.

Holding a keen interest and passion for learning new technologies or data skills like AWS and APIs is an advantage.
