Job Description

The Data Engineer embodies the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Ethics Code and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all applicable policies, procedures, guidelines, and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

If you work in Analytics at Northwestern Medicine, you would provide our clinical and administrative leadership with the development of insightful, compelling analytics products that influence the clinical and financial sectors of our health system. This is achieved through patient engagement to understand opportunities for enhancement, then applying the appropriate analytical solution to instigate that enhancement. Northwestern Medicine seeks a data-driven, business-oriented, result-focused Data Engineer to be part of our team. The Data Engineer discovers insights that inform strategy and optimum decision-making for the executive team and leaders across the organization. In this role, your duty is to understand the ‘who, what, and whys’ of our business—working cross-functionally to actualize the value of NM’s data assets.

Responsibilities:

  • The Data Engineer is responsible for delivering data warehouse and analytical solutions by ingesting, integrating, and curating data, establishing analytical solutions, and administering systems to provide information to the health system.
  • The task of synthesizing raw data into actionable information for use in analytical solutions falls to the Data Engineer, who serves as a functional and content expert of the data warehouse.
  • Applies advanced SQL knowledge and the ability to create complex queries and stored procedures by using relational database skills.
  • Collaborates with the Architecture team in the design and execution of solutions.
  • Ensures that new and existing data models and databases align with approved data architecture standards.
  • Develops and executes architecture solutions, ensuring that solutions are leveraged—documents and communicates the approach to integrating all solution components.
  • Defines key solutions and ensures their management for utilization by users and across teams—researches, analyzes, determines capabilities and proposes solution alternatives to address specific business necessities and product/service strategies.
  • Keeps up-to-date with current trends and developments in the field—actively explores emerging technologies.
  • Independently collaborates with business users to gather and outline requirements and propose analytical solutions to meet business needs.
  • Assists with design and development, including data analysis, source-target mapping, quality profiling, change data capture, and code performance.
  • Evaluates data quality and interprets results in a clear, concise manner.
  • Document any programming changes and design, system modifications, and their connected maintenance.
  • Lead analytics projects and remain accountable for working with the business to gather requirements and deliver analytical solutions that surpass customer expectations.
  • Work collaboratively with and provide support for multiple departments' efforts and projects.
  • Nurture staff by sharing skills, experiences, knowledge, and expertise on analytic tools and solutions.
  • Act as a subject matter authority within the department.
  • Offer training and support throughout the organization for the usage of analytic tools.
  • Carry out other assigned duties and tasks.

Qualifications

Required:

  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in the relevant field.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in a role that requires querying and analyzing data and/or data modeling/architecture.
  • Experience in working with multiple data warehousing models and design principles (e.g., Inmom Kimball).
  • Experience with the development and maintenance of ETL/data pipelines (e.g., Microsoft SSIS, Azure Data Factory).
  • Experience with OLAP or Tabular cube software.
  • Experience in using SQL for data extraction, manipulation, and reporting.
  • Prior exposure to work in an Agile environment.
  • Strong skills in relational database including advanced SQL knowledge and the ability to create complex queries and stored procedures.
  • Experience with report writing and data visualization tools such as: Microsoft Power BI, Tableau, Crystal Reports, SSRS, etc.

Preferred:

  • Experience in developing, designing, and supporting applications and relational databases.
  • Experience in using a software package for statistical analysis (R, Python, etc).
  • Prior experience with Epic Clarity data.
  • Previous healthcare exposure, ideally with a health system.
