At AstraZeneca, our Biologics Engineering team is at the forefront of discovering and optimizing next-generation biological drug candidates across key therapy areas. We specialize in developing cutting-edge biologics discovery platforms and novel drug modalities to address unmet medical needs. Join us to take smart risks and stay ahead in the fast-paced Oncology field.

What You'll Do

As a Bioinformatician / Data Scientist, you will:

  • Work closely with R&D scientists in software engineering, lab automation, computational modeling, and machine learning.
  • Utilize access to biologics R&D data across AstraZeneca to build and inform predictive models.
  • Develop and manage the flow of data to create robust end-to-end data management capabilities, significantly impacting the delivery of novel biologics drugs.
  • Create automated pipelines for data flow in biologics discovery.
  • Develop applications to configure and customize commercial Genedata Biologics software for tracking biologics discovery data from antibody screening, protein engineering, and protein production.
  • Extend the functionality of Genedata Biologics by developing custom computational tools using its Java Software Development Kit for data ingestion from lab instruments and data analysis.
  • Collaborate with IT to deploy and maintain the live Genedata Biologics system and integrate it with external databases.
  • Work with web application developers to integrate the Genedata Biologics system with custom applications for experiment design and data analysis.
  • Team up with machine learning colleagues to develop an active learning system that continually trains models on data from biologics experiments and uses these data to inform subsequent experiments.
  • Stay updated on leading machine learning methods for biologics design and active learning applied to biologics experiments.

Essential for the Role

  • MSc degree or equivalent experience in computer science, bioinformatics, or a relevant computational field.
  • Experience working in a scientific environment, generating insights from R&D data sets preferably in Drug Discovery.
  • Proficiency with SQL, including configuring and querying databases programmatically.
  • Experience developing high-quality object-oriented software in Java or Python.
  • Knowledge of software development best practices.
  • Experience working with Genedata Biologics or a similar platform for biological data management.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment.
  • A can-do attitude, acting with integrity and the desire to learn and grow.

Desirable for the Role

  • Ph.D. in a relevant field.
  • Experience working at the interface of dry/wet lab and knowledge of data formats for lab automation equipment.
  • Familiarity with agile methodology.
  • Experience developing, debugging, and managing data analysis pipelines, as well as an understanding of data requirements for downstream machine learning.
  • Exposure to graph database systems and related query languages e.g., SPARQL.
