Role:

Depop is seeking talented Data Science Interns to join our Applied ML team for a period of 12 weeks starting from March 2024. 

Our team, consisting of 17 Data Scientists and engineers, employs cutting-edge ML techniques and technology to enhance our understanding of ethical fashion, enrich our community, and improve user experiences. We're passionate about our work and invite you to join us in our endeavors.

As a Data Science intern at Depop, you’ll become part of one of our top-performing teams:

1. Search: Delve into the realm of search technologies, primarily Elasticsearch and Learning to Rank. Optimize our search algorithms to allow users effortless discovery of their ideal fashion items within our expansive marketplace.

2. Recommendations: Be part of the team crafting our popular daily recommendations that connect our community with items they will love. Utilize the power of data and machine learning to create personalized shopping experiences.

3. Trust and Safety: Play a crucial role in maintaining the security and trustworthiness of our platform. Develop models to identify prohibited items, fraudulent activities, and other trust and safety issues, ensuring that our users can shop and sell with confidence.

4. Sellers: Collaborate with our sellers’ team to automate the listing process, making it as smooth as possible. Develop solutions to streamline and enhance the experience for our esteemed sellers.

As an intern at Depop, you'll participate in a unique, highly individualized mentorship program within the Data Science team. You'll be able to learn directly from experienced professionals who will guide you through every aspect of your role. Our team is committed to promoting your growth, ensuring you gain practical experience, and providing personalized guidance to enhance your data science skills, enabling you to make a significant impact in the field.

Timelines:

Candidates must be available to start in a full-time capacity for 12 weeks starting early March 2024. Please clearly state your availability in your application, as preference will be given to candidates devoted to these start dates.

Applications will be reviewed in early December, and successful candidates will be invited for interviews throughout January and February 2024.

Responsibilities:

You will:

  • Research, design and deliver machine learning solutions to address issues in the Applied ML field
  • Keep abreast with the latest research for your internship project, with the opportunity to apply this within the product
  • Participate in team ceremonies (follow the agile cadence, technical whiteboarding sessions, product roadmapping, etc)
  • Report and present technical findings to both technical and non-technical audiences

Qualifications

Skills and experience

  • Completion of a degree program in a quantitative field such as Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics or similar disciplines, or a record of relevant industry experience
  • Experience in at least one coding language
  • Solid understanding of machine learning and data science concepts,
  • Collaborative and humble team player with an ability to work with cross-functional teams, including technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Passion for learning new skills and staying up-to-date with ML algorithms

Bonus points

  • Experience with Python
  • Familiarity working with common frameworks such as scikit-learn, TensorFlow, or
