Job Opportunity: Senior DevOps Engineer

Client: USGS – Science Analytics and Synthesis (SAS)

Location/Hours: Remote (Monday – Friday, 8 AM – 5 PM MT). Periodic after-hours or weekend support may be required due to system outages, upgrades, or scheduled maintenance.

Travel: Potential yearly in-person conference in Denver, Colorado.

Citizenship: US Citizen or Green Card/Permanent Resident (Background check required).

Program Overview:

The Science Analytics and Synthesis (SAS) program supports sophisticated, distributed scientific data synthesis and analysis alongside USGS scientists and collaborators. Our mission includes:

• Developing national data products for USGS science
• Strategic research and informatics partnerships
• Innovative tools and technologies for scientific discovery
• Advancements in biodiversity science and biogeography
• Digital library research and data services

We provide technical and operational support to our expansive SAS portfolio, which is powered by AWS cloud hosting and a local data center with over 200 virtual machines. Technologies include NetApp storage appliances and VMware for virtualization.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or similar (or 15+ years of equivalent work experience)
• Certification in AWS Development/Solutions Architect preferred
• Database Administration experience helpful

Job Functions:

As a Senior DevOps Engineer, you will:

• Design, develop, and debug new software and enhance existing software
• Resolve software issues and respond to customer feedback
• Develop software user manuals
• Conduct system engineering tasks, including major system design, integration, and implementation
• Provide quality assurance and evaluate new and existing software products
• Support areas such as DevSecOps, System Administration, Database Administration, and more
• Manage virtualized infrastructure using VMware tools (vCenter, vSphere)
• Administer and develop databases using PostgreSQL, Solr/Lucene, Elasticsearch AWS RDS, and MongoDB
• Implement architecture planning using virtualization, distributed infrastructure, and load balancing
• Utilize configuration management tools like Puppet and version control tools like Git
• Use Docker, ECS, EKS, NGINX, Apache, Terraform, and other toolkits to enhance web applications
• Understand and implement infrastructure as code concepts
• Deploy ESRI tools and products in AWS or on-premises environments
• Optimize SAS systems for AWS cloud infrastructure
