Varo Bank, an all-digital, mission-driven financial institution that's FDIC insured, is looking for a dynamic Director of Data Science to lead our progressive Data Science team. About This Role

As the Director of Data Science at Varo, you'll head a diverse team within the Data organization, which includes areas like Data Analytics, Data Science, Data Product Management, Data Engineering, and ML Engineering. Your goal will be to drive essential decision-making across our key business verticals (acquisition/engagement, fraud, lending, operations) by leveraging data.

You will collaborate with business and engineering stakeholders to address complex commercial challenges, apply innovative machine learning and causal inference methodologies, and spearhead the integration of these solutions into our systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Own and advance the data science strategy and initiatives at Varo, focusing on artificial intelligence, machine learning, and causal inference.
• Design and deploy models that impact all of Varo’s business areas, while setting up frameworks for their ongoing evaluation and enhancement.
• Explore and validate new data sources and data collection techniques to ensure robustness and accuracy.
• Apply a comprehensive risk framework to your analyses and modeling practices.
• Identify opportunities for leveraging data to inform strategic business decisions and collaborate with various teams to implement these models effectively.

What You'll Bring

You'll need a strong background in Data Science with over 8 years of experience, preferably with flexibility across individual contributor and managerial roles. An advanced degree in a quantitative field such as computer science, engineering, statistics, operations research, or economics is essential. Experience in Python, applying statistical techniques to large datasets, and a history of demonstrated impact and leadership in key areas are all crucial. Knowledge in Generative AI would be a significant plus.
