Purpose of Consultancy

UNFPA Mozambique is seeking an experienced Data Analyst/Statistical Expert to conduct in-depth analyses using data from the Mozambique Demographic & Health Survey (MDHS) 2022-23. This survey provides crucial indicators for the ICPD and 2030 SDGs agenda. Your insights will inform public health interventions, policy-making, and resource allocation to improve healthcare outcomes in Mozambique. Key focus areas include fertility, maternal and child health, contraceptive use, and child marriage.

Scope of Work

Your tasks will involve statistical analysis of various demographic and health indicators. The studies will cover:

  • Fertility Analysis by birth order and teenage pregnancies
  • Assessing maternal and newborn mortality and quality of maternal health care
  • Examining contraceptive prevalence, unmet needs, and discontinuation
  • Analyzing child marriage levels and consequences
  • Estimating demographic indicators using small area estimation techniques
  • Producing national and provincial level briefs using the MDHS 2022-23 data

Detailed Study Summaries

Each study will include a comprehensive analysis of relevant data, methodological approaches, and demographic indicators. For instance:

  • Fertility Analysis: Examining trends from 2003 to 2022, focusing on parity-specific fertility measures and teenage pregnancies.
  • Maternal Health: Situational analysis of maternal care services, associated sociodemographic determinants, and inequality in service utilization.
  • Contraceptive Use Analysis: Trends in contraceptive switching, failure, and abandonment, with a focus on quality of care.
  • Small Area Estimation: Developing methodologies to estimate key demographic indicators at the subnational level.
  • Child Marriage Analysis: Estimating the prevalence and consequences of child marriages on various health and socio-economic indicators.

Duration and Schedule

The assignment will span from 1st July 2024 to 31st March 2025 (8 months). Key deliverables include an inception report, draft presentations, validation meetings, and final reports with comprehensive maps and graphs.

Place of Work

The consultant will work remotely, coordinating closely with UNFPA.

Delivery of Work

All materials will be submitted electronically to UNFPA.

Monitoring and Progress Control

The consultant will maintain close coordination with UNFPA to ensure quality and standards are met. Progress will be monitored regularly, with monthly reports required for payment approval.

Deliverables and Payment Schedule

  • Monthly Progress Reports: Payment will be made monthly upon approval of progress reports.

Supervisory Arrangements

The consultant will report directly to the Technical Specialist (P&D Team Leader) at UNFPA.

Required Expertise and Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher in Public Health, Demography, Statistics, or a related field.
  • Minimum 7 years of professional experience in data analysis of sample surveys (DHS and MICS) in sexual and reproductive health, family planning, and GBV.
  • Proficiency in STATA/R for analyzing survey data.
  • Knowledge of FP landscape, population dynamics, and socio-cultural issues in developing countries.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with government officials.
  • Fluency in oral and written English.
  • Excellent interpersonal and general communication skills.

Inputs/Services Provided by UNFPA

The consultant is expected to use their own laptop or other necessary equipment.

Additional Information

Individual consultancy contracts will be signed between the Consultant and UNFPA Mozambique Country Office.
