We are the data engineering team. Our responsibility lies in ensuring that data is provided within our data platforms in a prompt manner, with high levels of accuracy and completeness. Our goal is to ensure that our internal customers can reliably produce data analysis, models, and reports regularly without any interruption.
We are actively working to ensure our data exists within a single platform on GCP, engineered using modern engineering principles and adopting best practices in software engineering.
Our future vision includes transitioning our traditional batch-based data warehousing processes to modern streaming-based approaches, built in a more scalable, robust, and distributed manner, to meet increasingly high Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
Here's what you'll be doing...
Our new Junior Data Engineer will work collaboratively to assist in migrating our legacy data warehouses to GCP, developing new batch and streaming-based pipelines. The engineer will use the GCP stack of data engineering tools to integrate data sources in a robust and cost-effective manner, following best practice data engineering principles.
The Junior Data Engineer will expand upon their initial experience in data engineering by doing day to day maintenance of our existing pipeline suite, identifying common problems in our routine tasks which can be solved using new tools or automation. They will be able to tackle small scale development with the help of more senior engineers.
Duties will include:
- Responsibility for the end-to-end delivery of development projects and maintenance of daily data pipelines.
- Development of new/current platform features with the assistance of more senior engineers.
- Requirement to work within the architectural boundaries of the future data platform.
- Identification of common issues, innovative ideas for prevention, and resolution of regular workloads in more efficient manners.
- Opportunity to work on innovative mechanisms to help us run more cost-effective data platforms and identify quality issues.
- Development with the cost of ownership in mind.
Experience which will give you an advantage includes:
- A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as computer science, engineering, mathematics.
- A strong numeric background and attention to detail.
- 0.5-1+ years of experience building and operating big data platforms using cloud-based technologies.
- Proficiency in Python or another general-purpose language.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with both business and technical audiences.
- Curiosity, eagerness to learn, and ability to design pragmatic solutions to complex problems.
- Experience in working and delivering end-to-end projects independently.
- Familiarity with Python on Google Cloud Platform for Big Data projects, BigQuery, DataFlow (Apache Beam), Cloud Functions, Cloud Workflows, Cloud Composer.
- Demonstrated strength in data modeling, ETL development, and data warehousing.
- Knowledge of data management fundamentals and data storage principles.
- Familiarity with statistical models and/or data mining algorithms and practical experience of applying these to business problems.
