About the Role: Lead Data Engineer

As a Lead Data Engineer at Target, you will be the technical backbone for our data engineering team supporting various products. Responsible for creating and owning the optimal data architecture, you ensure both functionality and non-functionality to meet our product needs. You will spearhead architectural changes to expedite feature development and enhance service quality. With profound engineering skills, you'll design and implement comprehensive data architecture while influencing a broader team to multiply your impact.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

Leverage technical expertise to stay abreast of current and emerging data technologies within specialized technology domains. Evaluate new technologies, considering their suitability for Target’s technical environment, maintenance, and cost-effectiveness.

Research & Development

Initiate and lead research and proof-of-concept activities for new data technologies.

Strategic Planning

Set testing and debugging strategies at platform or enterprise levels. As an expert, you'll establish and elevate standards and best practices to ensure scalable, high-performance, and secure data solutions.

Design & Lifecycle Management

Oversee the design, lifecycle management, and total cost of ownership for data services. Promote re-use and develop consistent, scalable patterns as a thought leader.

Enterprise Impact

Contribute to planning data services affecting the enterprise. Provide solutions for moderately complex technical problems, escalating issues when necessary.

Data Analysis

Gather and analyze data from diverse sources. Engage with stakeholders and employ in-depth analysis to drive insights.

Project Management

Develop project plans and schedules, estimate resources, define milestones, and monitor workflow and risks. Lead efforts to mitigate risks and remove obstacles.

Implementation & Automation

Lead and participate in complex data construction, automation, and implementation activities, ensuring all architectural and operational requirements are met.

Standards & Best Practices

Establish standards and best practices for monitoring, testing, automating, and maintaining data systems. Serve as a disaster recovery planning expert.

Continuous Learning

Stay current with Target’s technical capabilities and infrastructure. Maintain deep technical knowledge within your areas of expertise.

Data Modeling

Develop full-scope data models (logical, physical, and canonical), influence data standards, policies, and procedures.

Optimization

Install, configure, and optimize data management solutions with minimal guidance. Identify and implement optimization opportunities.

About You

Education: A 4-year degree or equivalent experience

Experience: 7+ years in software development with at least one full cycle implementation

Domain Knowledge: Proficient in Target’s technology capabilities and aware of key competitors’ products and unique features

Technical Expertise: Advanced knowledge in multiple programming languages and frameworks (e.g., open source). Proficient in building Data Pipelines using Scala, Spark, Hadoop, HiveQL, and streaming frameworks like Kafka. Experience in near real-time data systems is a plus.

Communication Skills: Effective communication and coordination with project teams, partners, and stakeholders

System Analysis & Optimization: Expertise in analyzing and optimizing system capacity, performance, and health.

Data Lifecycle Management: Knowledge and development of solutions to enhance data lifecycle management.

Technical Knowledge: Keeping updated with evolving technologies through formal training and self-education.

Scalability: Experience in creating highly scalable distributed systems.
