Job Summary

The Manager of Data Engineering, internally known as the Mgr of Software Engineering, provides crucial leadership in aligning information systems development with business objectives for assigned applications and technologies. The incumbent directs and guides engineers, developers, data analysts, testers, DevOps, and contract labor teams. She/he ensures successful execution of project work plans by driving data/software development within the team, coordinating department priorities, and meeting development objectives.

This is a Hybrid role (twice a week) based in our Jersey City, NJ, Raleigh, NC, or Hartford, CT offices.

Responsibilities

  • Drive and facilitate Scrum activities at the sprint level, including sprint planning, backlog refinement/grooming, daily standup meetings, and retrospectives.
  • Act as Scrum Master, identifying and removing impediments to achieve sprint goals.
  • Track Scrum metrics like velocity, productivity, and quality at the team level.
  • Enforce the engineering process across teams and coordinate branch/merge activities, environment maintenance, code deployments, and proxy APMs, including prod data refresh.
  • Ensure engineering cycle correctness and completion, including code reviews, alignment to solution design, test case reviews, and integration testing.
  • Investigate bugs, perform root cause analysis, identify improvement opportunities, and support troubleshooting of new incidents related to the team’s functional areas.
  • Create and maintain CMRs, obtain approvals, submit to CAB, and manage release branches in GitHub. Facilitate deployment huddles.
  • Build team spirit, encourage communication, and continuously coach team members on collaboration and common goals.
  • Track team and individual velocity, productivity, attendance, and availability. Conduct 1:1s, provide feedback, and coach for professional development.
  • Submit quarterly and year-end performance assessments for FTEs. Participate in interviews, onboarding, and training of new hires.

Experience

  • Minimum of 7+ years in IT, including 1-2 years as an Engineering Manager or Lead managing cross-functional Agile teams in a medium to large corporate environment.
  • Proven Agile experience, particularly in Scrum, including sprint planning, daily standups, retrospectives, and tracking Agile metrics.
  • Experience managing teams and individuals, leading 1-2 teams, with a total of 7 years in IT (5 years as an engineer and 2 years in a managerial role).
  • Strong technical skills in at least one programming language (Java, .NET, or Python - Python preferred), with a deep understanding of the engineering cycle.
  • In-depth knowledge of distributed service-oriented architecture, microservices, and various integration types (RESTful APIs, event-driven systems).
  • Experience in a compliance-driven environment (SOX, SOC-2, NYDFS, etc.).

Education

Bachelor's degree in Management of Information Systems or related field required; a master's degree is preferred.

For individuals assigned or hired to work in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Jersey City, NJ; New York State; and/or Washington State, the base salary range is listed below as of the time of posting. This position is incentive eligible.

$145,000 - $190,000/year

Total individual compensation (base salary, short & long-term incentives) will take into account various factors, including but not limited to geographic location, scope & responsibilities, qualifications, talent availability, specialization, and business needs. The above range may be modified in the future.
