Why This Role?

We are seeking a talented individual to lead a team within our Search organization that develops state-of-the-art models for information retrieval. This group tackles a variety of tasks including generating dense vectors and reranking. You will have the opportunity to revolutionize search experiences by building efficient and precise search systems, with ample opportunity for innovation and productionization of your ideas.

Your work will focus on advancing semantic search techniques to improve accuracy and efficiency. This role involves working with a wide array of technologies and collaborating with other teams to integrate your contributions into our search infrastructure.

We are looking for someone passionate about search with a strong background in information retrieval. Ideal candidates will have experience working with diverse technologies and successfully collaborating with other teams.

Please note: We have offices in Toronto, Palo Alto, San Francisco, and London but proudly embrace being a remote-first company!

Role Responsibilities

As a Manager of Technical Staff on this team, you will:

  • Partner with our Product and Leadership teams to define project requirements, timelines, and deliverables.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with platform, biz, sales, and marketing teams.
  • Design, train, and improve upon cutting-edge search models.
  • Gather high-quality retrieval datasets and optimize data pipelines for model training and evaluation.
  • Work closely with the model serving team to ensure fast and stable inference.
  • Engage in research collaborations with partner organizations and academic institutions, publishing your work in top-tier conferences and journals.

Ideal Candidate

You may be a good fit if you have:

  • Experience leading and managing teams of highly technical engineers and researchers.
  • Proficiency in Python and related ML frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, TF-Serving, JAX, and XLA/MLIR.
  • Experience training representation models or using text embeddings in downstream tasks.
  • Familiarity with various information retrieval techniques, such as lexical search and dense vector search.
  • Understanding of autoregressive sequence models like Transformers.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.

Bonus Points For:

  • Proficiency in other programming languages, such as C++ or Golang.
  • Experience with large-scale distributed training strategies using GPUs.
