Join Our Team: Postdoctoral Appointee – Machine Learning for X-ray Science at Argonne National Laboratory

The Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory is a beacon of innovation in the realm of scientific research, and we are currently seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee with a focus on Machine Learning and X-ray Science. This is a premier opportunity for those passionate about pushing the boundaries of science and technology.

About the Position

The Scientific Software Engineering & Data Management Group within the X-Ray Science Division (XSD) at APS is excited to announce a call for applications. This postdoctoral role is designed to enhance and innovate the way we analyze and manage data through advanced methods such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). The successful candidate will develop new systems and approaches aimed at transforming data analysis in x-ray science, contributing significantly to scientific discovery.

This role is integral to the project “Intelligent Learning for Light Source and Neutron Source User Measurements Including Navigation and Experiment Steering (ILLUMINE)” funded under a Department of Energy award. Your work will directly impact the ability to quickly process and learn from vast datasets, thereby enhancing the capability of autonomous experiment control.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will:

  • Develop and apply innovative analysis methods using AI and ML.
  • Design systems that perform near-instrument data processing at the edge and leverage high-performance computing when necessary.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team across various national labs.
  • Implement, deploy, and evaluate ML approaches for light source data.
  • Communicate findings through scholarly journals and conferences.

Position Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • A PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Physical Sciences, or a related field obtained within the last three years.
  • Advanced programming skills, preferably in Python.
  • Experience in machine learning techniques and x-ray data analysis.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with UNIX or Linux operating systems.
  • A collaborative spirit needed for multidisciplinary scientific research.

Preferred qualifications include experience with synchrotron light sources, high-performance computing, and edge computing technologies.
