About the Role

We are seeking a Principal Applied Science Manager who can bring deep applied science expertise and a proven track record of shipping at-scale AI-enabled intelligent user-facing experiences to drive vision and execution for Microsoft 365 AI. As a part of Microsoft Teams, you will work in an exciting and fast-paced environment, collaborating closely with teams across the company, including Microsoft Research and various product groups. Responsibilities

  • Manage an innovative applied science team in the areas of Large Language Models, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning.
  • Provide technical leadership in these areas, guiding the development and deployment of conversational and language understanding models at scale.
  • Push the boundaries of AI platforms through innovation and partnership.
  • Advance best practices for Responsible AI and Privacy Preserving Machine Learning.
  • Support hiring, coaching, mentoring, and career development of Applied Scientists to build an inclusive and ambitious applied science team.
  • Collaborate closely with Microsoft Research and product teams to create the next generation of AI innovation in our products and services.
  • Communicate research progress, major breakthroughs, and product innovations both internally and externally through publications, presentations, and other media (e.g., blogs, press interviews).

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or a related field AND 6+ years of related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
  • OR Master's Degree in the aforementioned fields AND 4+ years of related experience
  • OR Doctorate in the aforementioned fields AND 3+ years of related experience
  • OR equivalent experience
  • 1+ year(s) of people management experience
  • Experienced in managing research or engineering teams in Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, or related fields
  • Technical background in coding and design, specifically in developing AI models for scaled production services
  • Demonstrated success in shipping applied research to production, highlighting a track record of combining coding skills with advanced expertise in AI model development

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s or Doctorate in Computer Science, Math, Statistics, or related areas with industry experience or a publication record in the areas of Large Language Models, Machine Learning, or Natural Language Processing
  • Problem-solving and data analysis skills, with expertise in developing or applying predictive analytics, statistical modelling, data mining, or machine learning algorithms
  • Leadership skills to influence others, understand team dynamics, and attract, retain, and develop team members
  • Grounded in growth mindset and advocate for diversity and inclusion
  • Customer-obsessed and passionate about product impact
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to simplify and explain complex ideas
