Principal Data Engineer Opportunity at Workiva

Workiva is seeking a Principal Data Engineer to join our dynamic Data Platform team. Lead the delivery of innovative platform capabilities and fit-for-purpose solutions and drive our business to $1B+ ARR.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of Workiva’s customer and market needs.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders to create a multi-year data platform strategy and roadmap.
- Define functional requirements and develop architectures including data ingestion, transformation, storage, and more.
- Champion the best-fit technology stack to meet current and future business needs.
Execution
- Design, develop, and scale robust data systems and platforms.
- Ensure data infrastructure meets quality, governance, lifecycle management, and compliance requirements.
- Implement large-scale data management and processing systems.
- Develop data extraction and integration code for various data sources using industry best practices.
- Deploy systems to integration and production environments with scalable processes.
- Monitor system health, define critical alerts, and work to improve data quality.
- Test software, validate data, and write automated tests to ensure functionality.
- Collaborate with internal and external customers to validate the completeness and correctness of data.
- Lead the team in emerging use cases and encryption requirements to maintain industry standards in data security.
- Design systems that balance data volume, latency, and customer requirements.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Math, Finance, Statistics, or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
- 10+ years of relevant experience in data engineering, including data warehousing, business intelligence tools, and large-scale datasets.
Preferred Qualifications
- 2-3 years of statistics experience.
- Expertise in big data processing and databases such as Snowflake, Databricks, SQL, Hadoop, Spark, Flink, and Beam.
- Experience with business intelligence reporting tools like QuickSight, Tableau, Splunk, and enterprise-scale machine learning tools.
- Proficiency in SQL query design, tuning, and scripting languages like Python and R.
- Experience with Data Lakes/Lakehouses and Agile, SRE, and DevOps processes.
Compensation and Benefits
We offer a competitive salary range in the US: $167,000.00 - $284,000.00, along with a discretionary annual bonus, Restricted Stock Units at hire, and a comprehensive 401(k) match and benefits package.
