Amazon's Fulfillment Planning & Execution (FPX) Science team, a part of the Supply Chain Optimization Technologies (SCOT) Fulfilment Optimization group, is on the lookout for a Principal Research Scientist with a speciality in Machine Learning. This role is crucial for enhancing our operational efficiencies globally through cutting-edge ML solutions and sophisticated modeling.

About This Role

As a Principal Research Scientist, you will be entrenched in some of the most challenging and mathematically complex issues in facility and transportation planning. Your expertise will help us improve the strategic management of Amazon’s expansive global fulfillment and transportation network. This includes the intricate planning of order distribution and optimizing shipping methods in terms of cost, speed, and carbon impact.

Your responsibilities will span from creating advanced mathematical models to developing real-time systems that perform thousands of transactions per second. You’ll work closely with a dynamic team of product managers, researchers, statisticians, and engineers to integrate state-of-the-art scientific methodologies into practical, scalable solutions.

Key Job Responsibilities

- Propose, design, and implement Machine Learning solutions that resolve a wide array of business challenges within Network Planning and Fulfillment Execution.

- Lead end-to-end ML project cycles from conceptualization and data analysis to prototyping, development, and deployment.

- Provide rigorous assessment and validation of modeling techniques used by others, mentoring peers and fostering a collaborative team environment.

- Influence and advocate optimal ML solutions to stakeholders at all levels, including executive decision-makers.

- Play a pivotal role in guiding the strategic direction of fulfillment optimization technologies within Amazon.

Location & Qualifications

This position is available in Bellevue, WA, USA. Ideal candidates should have:

  • At least 10 years of relevant tech industry experience
  • PhD in statistics, mathematics, economics, computer science, or another quantitative field
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively across diverse teams

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Proficiency in high-level modeling languages like AMPL, Mosel, R, Matlab, or Julia
