Responsibilities

As an R&D Engineer, you will:

  • Develop tools and production techniques for visual effects and feature animation.
  • Create innovative algorithms and user-friendly interfaces.
  • Optimize data management processes and build bespoke content creation tools.
  • Collaborate with engineers across different ILM studios and commercial software vendors.
  • Support artists through consultation and problem-solving.
  • Work occasionally on shot production, including image processing, compositing, and simulation.

Senior level positions also entail project and team leadership responsibilities.

Desired Qualifications

We're looking for individuals with:

  • Professional experience in software development and/or VFX production.
  • Proficiency in C++ and Python on Linux.
  • Interest or expertise in visual effects principles such as modeling, animation, lighting, and image processing.
  • Familiarity with software applications like Maya, Houdini, Katana, and Mari is preferred.
  • Understanding and experience with machine learning techniques and standard data formats (OpenEXR, OpenVDB, Alembic, USD).
  • Skill in designing artist-friendly interfaces using Qt, PySide, QML.
  • Knowledge of software development best practices including object-oriented design and test-driven development.

For senior positions, leadership and mentoring experience is essential.

Education & Experience

BS or advanced degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent experience.

This role is Hybrid, requiring a minimum of 2 days on-site per week at our London office, with the flexibility to work from home occasionally.
