Job Description

Extreme Event Solutions at Verisk (formerly AIR Worldwide) is the authoritative leader and most esteemed provider of risk modeling software and consulting services. Extreme Event Solutions at Verisk pioneered the catastrophe modeling industry in 1987 and currently models the risk from natural disasters, terrorism, and pandemics in 90 countries. Verisk offers the chance to work with advanced technologies, international clients, and hundreds of the most innovative, skilled minds in the industry. Join our Atmospheric Perils Vulnerability team as a part of our expanding Research and Modeling department in our Boston office. Utilize your knowledge of civil engineering and statistics to develop models of severe catastrophic events (e.g., hurricanes, tornadoes, storm surge, floods, etc.) and evaluate building performance in the context of such events.

The research engineer role is tasked with developing and supporting the engineering components of Verisk's wind vulnerability models covering multiple regions and hazards such as straight-line wind, tornadic wind, hail, snow, and freezing temperatures. General duties include identifying the impact of these hazards on the built environment, including physical damage leading to monetary loss to buildings/infrastructure, content, and loss of use (downtime). In this role, you will collaborate closely with a team of structural engineers and atmospheric scientists to conduct probabilistic risk assessments for the built environment and present and explain results to internal and external stakeholders and clients.

The evolving nature of research work at Verisk presents unique and challenging problems stimulating innovation and growth, creating opportunities for its employees. A successful candidate should have an inclination to use problem-solving skills in applying substantial engineering principles to solve peculiar and challenging problems in the fields of civil/structural engineering and risk assessment. Candidates are expected to be highly driven, thorough, well-organized, able to conduct quality self-directed research, have excellent written and verbal communication, and be team-oriented.

About the Day-to-Day Responsibilities of the Role

As a member of our Atmospheric Perils Vulnerability Team, your daily tasks will include the following:

  • Data collection and analysis for understanding the building inventory and its vulnerability to atmospheric hazards in various global regions
  • Analytical studies and research towards developing vulnerability functions and monetary loss curves for structural and non-structural building and infrastructure components exposed to hazards such as wind, tornadoes, hail, and snow in several regions of interest worldwide
  • Integration of research into AIR’s portfolio risk analysis models, including writing loss simulation codes and analysis tools, and probabilistic assessment validation
  • Using GIS tools for data visualization and analysis
  • Real-time and remote building damage assessments resulting from natural disasters during and after significant events
  • Preparing and presenting work at internal staff and client meetings as well as technical writing for internal and external publications, and client-facing documentation
