Role Summary

We are seeking a passionate Research Engineer to join our Responsible Engineering team within the Foundational Research Unit at Google DeepMind. In this role, you will contribute to cutting-edge research and the development of AI systems that prioritize safety, ethics, and broader beneficial impacts.

Key Responsibilities

As a Research Engineer, you will:

• Develop and prototype new ideas, both independently and collaboratively.
• Analyse experimental data and scale successful algorithms.
• Build tools and infrastructure to support advanced AI research projects.
• Bridge the gap between research insights and practical engineering applications.
• Communicate effectively with team members and adjacent groups, sharing insights and aligning project goals.
• Promote and implement engineering best practices within the team.
• Contribute your unique perspective to enhance our project directions and methodologies.
• Collaboratively grow your skills along with your colleagues in a shared learning environment.

Desired Skills and Experience

Candidates who excel in this role typically bring a blend of technical and soft skills, including:

• Proficiency in Python and AI libraries such as JAX, PyTorch, TensorFlow, and NumPy.
• A solid foundation in research methods, including statistics and a keen understanding of scientific literature.
• Experience with large-scale systems and distributed computing.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
• Awareness of the social impacts and risks associated with AI technologies.
• Experience in gathering and interpreting user feedback on AI systems.
