OpenAI's Legal team plays a vital role in promoting OpenAI's mission by addressing innovative, fundamental legal issues in AI. The team consists of professionals from various fields, including technology, AI, privacy, IP, corporate, employment, tax law, regulatory, and litigation.
About the Role
As a member of our AI Product Counsel team, you will aid in legal initiatives related to our advanced AI products, models, and technologies. You will be responsible for actively collaborating with our research, engineering, and product teams in the development and release of state-of-the-art products and services. This is a unique opportunity to engage directly with the leading edge of the legal and AI fields. This role reports to our Head of Product Counsel.
This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We follow a hybrid work model with three days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.
In this role, you will:
- Be the primary counsel and partner for several teams focused on AI research and product development.
- Identify and address product, regulatory, privacy, and other legal risks and mitigations.
- Develop strategies for tackling legal issues creatively and construct processes for scaling adaptable solutions that address risk.
- Collaborate with our commercial legal team to assist in bringing products to market, for consumers and enterprises.
- Become an expert in AI legal matters and help propose and advance AI legal policy positions.
You’ll enjoy this role if you:
- Have over 10 years of experience, combining both in-house and technology-focused law firm roles.
- Understand the specifics of the law and can address problems with a practical, principled approach.
- Build cross-functional relationships and develop communication styles that resonate with teams, balancing risk-taking with responsible development.
- Have a strong sense of ownership, enjoy being constantly challenged, are curious and passionate about technology, and can demonstrate sound judgement in ambiguous situations.
- Hold a JD and are licensed or qualified to practice in CA.
About the Interview Process
We will accept applications and conduct interviews through November with the aim of onboarding by early December. The interview process may include a written assessment and several values, skills, and behavioural interviews with our team, either virtually or in person.
