Job Overview

The Senior Data Engineer will play a critical role in supporting the CDC Foundation’s mission by creating, developing, and maintaining data infrastructure within the Informatics Unit at the Great Plains Tribal Epidemiology Center (GPTEC). This role is integral to the public health authority subsidiary of the Great Plains Tribal Leaders Health Board (GPTLHB). You will manage data architecture for receipt, generation, storage, processing, analysis, and secure transfer to Tribal Leaders and trusted community members. Collaborating with various professionals including data scientists, warehouse architects, IT staff, and others, the Senior Data Engineer will develop and implement solutions that meet GPTEC’s needs, aiming to create a comprehensive, user-friendly public health database for its 18 tribal communities. This position supports GPTEC’s goal to exercise broad public health authority within the State, Tribal, Local, and Territorial (STLT) ecosystem. This role is eligible for a fully remote work arrangement for U.S. based candidates.

Responsibilities

The Senior Data Engineer will:

  • Create and manage systems and pipelines for efficient data flow, including ingestion, processing, storage, and security.
  • Extract and transform data from various sources, ensuring accuracy and consistency, and load data into storage systems or data warehouses.
  • Optimize data pipelines, infrastructure, and workflows for performance and scalability.
  • Monitor systems for performance issues, errors, and anomalies, implementing solutions as needed.
  • Implement security measures to protect sensitive information.
  • Collaborate with data professionals to understand their data needs and ensure the data infrastructure supports organizational goals.
  • Design and manage data storage systems including relational and NoSQL databases.
  • Stay informed about industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in data engineering.
  • Provide technical guidance to staff and communicate effectively with organizational partners.

Qualifications

We are seeking candidates with:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, or a related field (Master’s or PhD preferred).
  • A minimum of 5 years of related experience.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, Scala, or SQL.
  • Experience with big data technologies and frameworks like Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, and Flink.
  • Strong understanding of database systems including relational and NoSQL databases.
  • Knowledge of engineering best practices like source control, automated testing, and continuous integration.
  • Expertise in data modeling, ETL processes, and data integration techniques.
  • Proficiency with cloud computing platforms and agile development methodologies.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience working in virtual environments.
