Senior Data Engineer (Java) - Fanduel

Senior Data Engineer (Java) - FanDuel

Job Description

Every weekend, we host a half million of our closest friends to watch the game, placing around 3 million friendly bets. Our customers experience odds, lines, spreads, play-by-play updates, deposits, and withdrawals – all powered by data. Each contest generates tens of millions of individual data points that must be collected, combined, understood, and acted on – all in real-time and at the speed of the game. This is not a sports job; this is a data job.

The Position

As a Senior Data Platform Engineer at FanDuel, you will help us unlock the full potential of vast amounts of real-time and relational data, providing our business with insights and delivering a world-class personalized experience to our customers. Your role will transform every user click, bet, goal, corner, or tackle into a real-time stream of actionable insights, enabling faster and better decision-making to give us a competitive edge.

Collaborate with engineering teams developing our online applications, data scientists working on mining and modeling, and analysts deriving insights from our data. Your work will involve building automated tools for data ingestion, modeling, and presentation, creating a coherent product for our stakeholders. As a Data Engineer, you’ll provide a unified information framework that allows FanDuel to intelligently react to game events and market trends.

Skills You'll Bring or Quickly Develop:

  • Passion for building highly scalable and available systems used by Data and Software Engineers, capable of efficiently running hundreds of data pipelines.
  • Experience with Java or Python is a significant plus.
  • Proficiency in implementing Software Development Kits (SDKs) and APIs at scale using Java or other Object-Oriented Programming languages.
  • Ability to process real-time streaming workloads with distributed event systems like Kafka, Kinesis, Google PubSub, Flink, and Spark Streaming.
  • Expertise in implementing data lake, warehouse, and lakehouse architectures, along with knowledge of data archiving and retrieval solutions.
  • Solid understanding of scalable data platform infrastructure and software engineering design patterns.
  • Familiarity with software development lifecycles and methods for ensuring successful software projects.

Exposure You’ll Gain:

  • Experimenting with new technologies for efficient problem-solving.
  • Building, running, and maintaining enterprise production platforms.
  • Understanding data security and privacy (e.g., GDPR, CPP).
  • Working within data governance and testing frameworks (e.g., Alation, Great Expectations).
  • Continuous integration and delivery of production data products.
  • Engaging in an inclusive culture that values excellence and prioritizes your growth and well-being as an engineer.
  • Providing On-call support for major incidents.

Growth at FanDuel

As you advance at FanDuel, you will:

  • Progress your career along well-defined, skill-based tracks with opportunities for compensation and advancement either as an individual contributor or a manager.
  • Apply your experience within an autonomous team with end-to-end ownership of key data architecture components.
  • Mentor junior engineers, focusing on craftsmanship, operational excellence, system reliability, automation, data quality, and cost-efficiency.

Data engineering is an ever-evolving field – we are searching for those who love experimenting, stay updated with the latest in data engineering tools, and constantly seek improvement.
