With our cutting-edge analytics, we integrate content, data, and analytics to fortify businesses, individuals, and societies with strength, resilience, and sustainability.

Job Description

As a Senior Research Engineer within our Atmospheric Perils Vulnerability Team, you will lead the development and enhancement of wind vulnerability models at Verisk. These models span various regions and include perils such as straight-line wind, tornadoes, hail, snow, and freezing temperatures. You will assess the impact these perils have on the built environment, which can include physical damage leading to financial losses in buildings, infrastructure, and downtime.

In this pivotal role, you will collaborate closely with structural engineers and atmospheric scientists to conduct probabilistic risk assessments. Your ability to communicate complex data and results clearly to both internal stakeholders and external clients will be crucial.

This role is perfect for a candidate who thrives on solving unique problems through excellent problem-solving skills and solid engineering knowledge, specifically in the fields of civil/structural engineering and risk assessment.

About the Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Collect, synthesize, and analyze data to comprehend building inventory vulnerabilities against insured losses and insurance claims due to atmospheric perils across multiple global regions.
  • Engage in the development of vulnerability functions and monetary loss curves for building and infrastructure components.
  • Implement these research insights into Verisk's risk analysis models, including programming loss simulation codes and analysis tools.
  • Utilize GIS and other tools for data visualization and perform real-time and virtual assessments of building damage after natural catastrophes.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports and presentations for both internal teams and external clients.

Qualifications

To excel in this role, you should have:

  • A Ph.D. in Wind Engineering, Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related fields.
  • Extensive experience in performance-based design and stochastic risk assessment.
  • Proficiency in programming languages like C++/C and Python, and familiarity with R, MATLAB, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong capabilities in data mining and statistical analysis, with knowledge of SQL.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and documentation skills.
  • Prior experience with GIS applications and knowledge of infrastructure vulnerability are advantageous.
