Job Opportunity: Senior Data Engineer at Nordstrom Analytical Platform (Hybrid)

Join Nordstrom's Analytical Platform (NAP) team, a cutting-edge, real-time, event-streaming-centric analytical platform that delivers high-quality, stitched 360 views of our customers, products, inventory, customer service, fulfillment, logistics, and credit. Our Insights Delivery Team focuses on providing data and insights to empower Nordstrom data analysts, data scientists, leadership, store personnel, and other business users to enhance customer experiences in near real-time.

Role and Responsibilities

As a Senior Data Engineer, you will:

• Design and develop scalable and durable data analytical solutions using in-house and modern technologies in an agile environment.
• Understand the specific needs of major lines of business and related applications, systems, or functions.
• Develop distributed data processing pipelines in the Big Data ecosystem in the Cloud, adhering to best engineering practices.
• Divide larger projects into manageable work units and mentor other engineers across a range of activities.
• Implement engineering standards, quality assurance standards, and security features.
• Conduct code reviews and enhance accountability in adhering to software engineering principles.
• Build testing tools and CI/CD pipelines to reduce automation friction and speed up business outcomes.
• Identify and optimize data performance issues.
• Provide ongoing production support and on-call support, working with both onsite and offshore resources.
• Manage cost savings, production notifications, alerts, and logging dashboards.
• Collaborate with product managers, data analysts, data scientists, business partners, and other tech teams.
• Partner with analyst stakeholders to deliver highly effective self-service BI solutions.
• Communicate clearly and efficiently with partner teams.
• Lead multiple projects simultaneously, manage complexity, and drive results.
• Mentor junior engineers and work closely with the engineering manager to build the team.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

• 5+ years of experience in at least one modern programming language such as Java or Python.
• 4+ years of experience with databases, SQL, data modeling, data mining, and automated engineering solutions. Familiarity with GCP Big Query and Presto is a plus.
• Experience with cloud environments like AWS or GCP.
• Experience in developing near real-time distributed data processing solutions using Kafka, Flink, Spark, Kubernetes, or Airflow.
• Expertise in scalable distributed systems, service-oriented, and event-driven streaming architecture.
• Experience in developing automation testing and CI/CD deployment tools.
• Knowledge of best practices for data engineering and operational excellence.
• Experience in project leadership, cross-team collaboration, complex system design, making critical quality technical decisions, and driving team results.
• Experience mentoring junior engineers.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• A passion for innovative technologies, operational excellence, and customer impact.
