The Recommendation team at Coupang is at the forefront of enhancing the e-commerce experience. We specialize in related product recommendations, personalized gateways, widget ranking, and product review quality. About the Role:
As a Staff Backend Engineer for Recommendations, you will play a crucial role in designing, developing, and maintaining Coupang's end-to-end Recommendation ecosystem. This includes our online ranking system, data pipelines for candidate and feature generation, and our content serving system. Collaboration with the Silicon Valley team is essential for shared ownership. Manage controlled experiments to validate and launch new features that enhance the customer experience.

Key Responsibilities:

• Own and manage the Recommendation service, a critical component to ensuring customer satisfaction at Coupang.
• Work closely with the Silicon Valley team to co-develop a world-class recommendation system.
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other teams to create a seamless user experience.
• Lead all stages of product development, from ideation to release, including rapid prototyping and A/B testing.
• Contribute exceptional programming skills to develop innovative, consumer-facing mobile products.
• Mentor and guide engineers within the team.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent.
• 5+ years of industry experience with distributed systems, transactional datastores, and systems programming.
• 5+ years of expertise in fundamental algorithms, system design, and large distributed systems.
• 5+ years of coding experience in C++, Java, Python, or Scala.
• Experience in building and owning user-facing API platforms and corresponding backend data systems.
• Strong communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Professional proficiency in Korean.
• Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related fields.
• Industrial experience with online serving systems at scale.
• Expertise in writing robust and efficient code in Java, including unit and integration tests.
• Experience with distributed processing systems like EMR, Spark, Hive, or equivalent big data frameworks.
• Knowledge of Stream-processing systems like Kafka, Storm, Spark-Streaming, or equivalents.
• Excellent communication skills with a growth mindset and a positive attitude.
