Company Description

About Shopify

Opportunity is not evenly distributed. Shopify enables independence for anyone with a dream to start a business. Since 2006, we have grown to more than 10,000 employees and generated over $500 billion in sales for millions of merchants in 175 countries. Every 28 seconds, an entrepreneur on Shopify makes their first sale.

This is life-changing work that directly affects people's lives as much as it transforms your own. It’s about empowering the many instead of the few, promoting a future with more voices rather than fewer, and fostering more choices rather than an elite option.

About you

Keeping pace with us involves a lot of change, complexity, and ambiguity—and a little bit of chaos. That's what makes Shopify an exciting place to work, although it might not be the right fit for everyone.

Before you apply, consider if you can:

  • Care deeply about what you do and strive to make commerce better for everyone
  • Excel by seeking professional and personal rapid growth
  • Keep up with a relentless pace (the week, not the quarter)
  • Be resilient and resourceful in the face of ambiguity and positively embrace change
  • Bring critical thought and opinion — and welcome differences and disagreement to get things done and progress
  • Use a digital-first approach in your daily work

Job Description

About the role

As a Product Analytics professional, you'll be responsible for transforming raw data into actionable insights to guide the development and improvement of our products. This role isn't for the faint-hearted or those seeking a conventional corporate structure - we operate on the principles of low process, high trust, and high impact. The aim is to get things done quickly and efficiently, whilst continually learning and adapting to changes in a dynamic environment.

Our product is designed to empower entrepreneurs and stimulate personal growth. Therefore, the work you do will not only create value for our users but also contribute to global entrepreneurship. To succeed here, you must be dedicated to your craft and committed to constant development. You should be able to solve complex problems, handle a bit of chaos, and maintain your composure.

As a Staff Data Scientist, you will partner with Product, Engineering, UX, and other areas to lead through data and achieve product/business goals. Product Data Scientists have the following responsibilities:

  • Proactively identify and champion projects that solve complex problems across various domains and business areas.
  • Work closely with product, engineering and other business leaders to influence strategy, product development, and decisions with data
  • Take ownership of broad problems across product/business domains and ensure beneficial outcomes for all of Shopify.
  • Create actionable KPIs, production-quality dashboards, deep dives, and scalable data products that serve their purpose and exemplify excellence across the whole organization.
  • Directly drive substantial improvements to our business by applying specialized skills and fundamental data science methods (e.g. regression, survival analysis, segmentation, experimentation, and machine learning when appropriate)
  • Design and implement end-to-end data pipelines: work closely with stakeholders, particularly data engineering, to build instrumentation and define dimensional models, tables or schemas that support business processes.
  • Influence leadership to make more data-driven decisions and foster a culture of effective use of data across the company.
  • Establish and progress best practices in data science and product teams across Shopify.

There are several teams looking for Product Data Scientists to partner with them and drive value for our merchants. These include:

Checkout & Storefront

The Core Product Data Science team uses state-of-the-art analytical techniques and robust business & product acumen to make better decisions and achieve better outcomes for Shopify's merchants. Data Scientists turn data into actionable insights using various analytical methods, such as W/B tests, in-depth studies, advanced modeling, data visualizations, etc., to shape and support our product development strategies.

Commercial/Revenue Analytics

The Commercial/Revenue Analytics team provides data insights to assist our revenue leadership team in understanding business performance through data, supporting key business decisions, and advising on business operational improvement opportunities. As a Staff Product Data Scientist, you’ll help enhance the team's data maturity from descriptive analytics to predictive/prescriptive analytics so we can leverage data to boost performance and effectiveness across pre-sales, sales, and post-sales processes.

Revenue Marketing Data Science

The Revenue Marketing Data Science team at Shopify combines advanced marketing expertise with rigorous analytical methodologies to optimize our revenue strategies. As a Staff Product Data Scientist, you'll convert extensive marketing data into actionable insights, using methodologies ranging from performance marketing to brand measurement, ABM, and multi-touch attribution. Your analyses – whether through A/B tests or in-depth studies – will be crucial in refining and guiding our revenue marketing efforts.

Support Data Science

The Support Data Science team creates data products to continuously monitor and improve Shopify's customer service, knowledge management, merchant satisfaction and retention. They use cutting-edge analytical and AI-powered methods like causal inference, predictive analytics, prescription analytics, and more. In addition, this team is responsible for pulling together the voice of customers (Shopify merchants) from all merchant interactions and providing critical feedback for Shopify's product improvements. Support Data Scientists play a vital role in making sure our merchants are successful on the Shopify platform, adopt our new products, and increase their GMV, which consequently leads to higher revenue for Shopify.
