Job Description

The Cash App Quantitative Finance Team is a sophisticated mix of machine learning modelers, data scientists, ex-strategy consultants, and data engineers who are dedicated to applying top-notch AI, graph analytics, and machine learning algorithms to solve business problems within Cash App and the broader Block organization.

We have cracked some of the most intricate puzzles associated with the formation and evolution of our network, comprehension of customer churn or re-engagement with the platform, and the instinctive drives behind the inflow and outflow of money on the platform. Our team's output informs high-level company strategies across product development, marketing, and finance. We work in collaboration with the broader Block ecosystem and directly interface with Foundational Engineering, Data Engineering, marketing, customer insights, and finance.

As an Applied AI and Data Science Lead in our team, your responsibilities will not be limited to just developing these models; you will have the opportunity to spearhead the deployment of Generative AI applications within our business (e.g. classification, natural language querying). You will work on intricate graph/network problems and gain exposure to the highest levels of leadership across Block.

Due to the unique nature of this role, we need someone who can oversee the complete model development process (from requirements and data to development and implementation) and understands business contexts, coupled with the ability to communicate effectively with senior leaders.

Qualifications

You possess:

  • An advanced degree (M.S., PhD.) in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Physics, Mathematics, or a related technical field.
  • Applicable industry experience of a PhD for 2 years or a Master’s for 4 years, in developing machine learning/statistical models to solve practical problems   (e.g. classification, NLP, regression).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for conveying analytical findings and making significant influence amongst Cash and Block Executives.
  • Familiarity with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP) and big data technologies (e.g., Databricks) is advantageous.
  • A strong capacity for machine learning model development using Python (numpy, pandas, tensorflow, pytorch, scikit-learn etc.) and an understanding of SQL/NoSQL interaction patterns.
  • Comfort with the Linux/OS X command line, version control software (git), and general software development principles with a machine learning software development life-cycle orientation.

Would be great if you have:

  • A passion for or familiarity with graph theory problems/network science.
  • Experience with consumer behaviors in the context of financial services.
  • Open Source Contributions.
