Why Choose Shiftsmart
We're creating the labor equivalent of Amazon - a platform for hourly work in the enterprise sector. At Shiftsmart, we work with the world's biggest companies and government agencies, such as Walmart, PepsiCo, Google, and Circle K - to break down jobs into shifts, improve labor supply and liquidity, and enable our global network of over 3 million workers to work across locations, employers, and work categories. We've grown to over $100M ARR, doubling annually since our inception, paid over $130M in wages to hourly workers, and raised $120M from top-tier investors like D1 Capital & Imaginary Ventures. And we're just getting started.
Our mission is to build the world’s leading platform for hourly workers and businesses enabling flexibility, choice, and upward social mobility.
Join a rising star. This is a unique opportunity to join a rapidly scaling business that's revolutionizing the way hourly labor works, and is poised to capture a $2 trillion dollar opportunity in the US alone.
Ownership + impact. Join a team that's challenging and encouraging one another to create a great business, while creating flexibility, choice, and upward social mobility for workers worldwide.
Chart your career path. Enjoy accelerated learning and growth working with a world-class team from top tech companies (e.g. Uber, Airbnb, Google, Amazon), business schools (e.g. HBS, GSB, Wharton), and professional services (e.g. Bain, BCG, Goldman).
Become a leading executor. We strongly believe in #ExecutionIsBinary, and are committed to helping you master this skill during your tenure here and beyond.
Mission: What we do and why we need you
The mission of the Data Science team is to build models that enhance shift fill rate and fulfillment quality by maximizing outcomes and opportunities for highly reliable partners and nurturing less reliable partners. We collaborate with engineering to inform, design, and develop dispatch algorithms that propel our business forward, at scale.
In this role, you may design and refine reliability forecasting models and dispatch algorithms, examine how features correlate with and affect shift fill rates, and experiment with how incentives impact the behavior of workers on our platform. Whatever it is, you'll focus on what has the greatest impact for Shiftsmart.
Shiftsmart is based in New York City, but we are open to remote applicants for this role.
Outcomes: Problems you will solve
You will work closely with our machine learning, data engineering, product, and operations teams to:
Develop and refine capacity, utilization, and cannibalization models for highly reliable partners to maximize fill rates with high accuracy, using features such as time of day, day of week, etc.
Create partner lead scoring metrics to maximize LTV and the ROI on growth that forecasts reliability with greater accuracy at an earlier stage in the partner lifecycle, and understand how incentives impact reliability (e.g., wages, bonus).
Inform the algorithms behind shift dispatch models to improve shift fill rates and shift quality.
Competencies: Who you are
Do you have what it takes to be a founding member of our data science team and optimize our operations at scale? Here are the abilities you'll need:
Data science expert: More than 4 years of data science experience, including building models from the ground up, end-to-end.
Structured thinker: Capable of breaking down complex, unstructured problems and solving them in a hypothesis-driven, structured manner.
Business oriented: Proficient in building models that drive business outcomes vs academic completeness - recognize what is good enough vs what is perfect.
Pragmatic approach: Able to prioritize problems for what drives business impact.
Clear communicator: Able to undertake and drive complex projects with multiple internal stakeholders across Product, Engineering, Growth, and Operations.
Technically skilled: Comfortable with data extraction and transformation with SQL, ability to extract insights using common data science tools such as R, Python, and familiar with common algorithms such as random forest models.
Compensation philosophy
To promote transparency, we share base ranges, which are based on role and level benchmarked against similar stage, high growth companies. Offers are determined based on a variety of factors such as skills, work experience, and relevant credentials.
In addition to competitive salaries and meaningful equity, we offer the following benefits:
Comprehensive health coverage: We cover 100% of employee premiums for medical, dental, and vision care (60-75% for dependents)
401(k) match program: We match 100% on the first 3% of your contributions and 50% on the next 2% for a maximum match of 4%
Generous, fully paid parental and family leave policies

Operating Principles @ Shiftsmart
Inspired by
Execution Is Binary
We #GetShiftDone. We take great pride in the quality of our work and our relentless determination to deliver on our commitments. If we say we're going to do something, we do it.
We own the outcome with an unstoppable mindset right through the finish line and are eager to push forward. This means we work very hard, execute with urgency, and aggressively challenge deadlines for anything important. As a result, we don't pass the buck to other teams or individuals. Instead, we take the problem as far as we can and only ask others for help when absolutely necessary.
Whenever a crisis or opportunity arises, we take the hill as one team, because we simply can't stomach the phrase “it can’t be done”.
Missionaries, Not Mercenaries
Team before self. We believe in our mission to build a better world for workers. We understand why our work matters and how it impacts our customers and partners. This belief permeates everything we do, from high-level strategy to everyday tasks.
We're energetic, ambitious, and driven to win. We constantly set higher standards for ourselves and everyone around us. We show up for our customers, partners, and most importantly, our team members, and go the extra mile to build lasting relationships with all of them.
We don't measure success based on our job titles or the size of our territories. We put the needs of the business ahead of the particulars of our job descriptions. Instead of fighting for a bigger piece of the pie, we work to make the pie larger, knowing that this is how we grow our careers as well.
Inputs > Outcomes
We work very hard. Fundamentally transforming the labor landscape is no easy feat. It often requires long days, late nights, and weekends to deliver on our commitments. We rise to this challenge.
We focus on the process. We see things in terms of value chains and appreciate that a bad process with a good outcome is merely a stroke of luck.
We lead with data. We use facts, not fiction, to build narratives and make decisions. To do this, we prepare written memos in advance and resist the temptation to engage in endless water cooler conjectures, as we value our teammates' time and attention.
We hire and develop the best. When we decide to hire a new team member, it's because we believe they will increase the overall talent on our team. We view ourselves as leverage maximizers rather than inconvenience reducers and strive to boost the output of everyone we interact with.
Honesty Over Harmony
We tell the truth even when it is difficult. However, we don't share the truth carelessly to hurt people's feelings or make them look bad. We also assume positive intent. If someone isn't delivering in the way that we need, we ask them and tell them before jumping to conclusions.
We embrace reciprocal feedback. As people leaders, we care more about our team's growth and success than being liked. As individuals, we seek, accept, and apply feedback. We don't take feedback personally because we understand it enables us to learn and grow.
We are honest with ourselves. We reject an overly optimistic view of our world. Instead, if something we're responsible for isn't going well, we call it out. And if someone acknowledges their own situation that might be subpar, we don't penalize them for it.
We address problems in the moment. If something is broken or we disagree, we speak up and address it on the spot, even if it feels uncomfortable. This means that if something is broken, we don't just accept it and complain about it later.
Invent & Iterate
We are natural inventors. We categorically reject the phrase “that’s how it’s always been done” and are constantly discovering new and better ways to deliver more with less. We're resourceful and often do things that don't scale, only to find ways to scale them later. We're builders.
We dream BIG. At all levels of the company, we pursue big, ambitious, audacious, transformative goals. We fear stagnation and incremental thinking more than failing to deliver or falling short of a lofty goal. We believe courage means trying without fear and learning without ego.
We don't let perfect interfere with better. When confronted with a choice, we prioritize delivering something, even if imperfect, over endless debate and alignment. We embrace beneficial mistakes.
